Chindits: Indian Naval Ship ‘Kalpeni’ Visits Maldives On Joint Maritime Security Patrol

An Indian Naval Ship ‘Kalpeni’, arrived in Maldives on 12th February for a 5 day joint exercise with MNDF Coast Guard. The aim of the exercise is to jointly conduct maritime security patrol in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Maldives. During this visit, the MNDF Coast Guard personnel will be embarking the ship and will be undertaking various operational training with Indian Naval personnel. The joint patrol is aimed at increasing maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, especially in the waters around Maldives.

The current exercise is a part of bilateral cooperation.

Nasheed in Indian High Commission. INS Kalpeni in Maldives. Any connection?

What then was the objective of Op Cactus-1? :D

There were PLOTE mercenaries on the loose, were there not?

Right now if our forces land in that country, we would be at war with Maldives itself. We may not like the present govt there, but we are not the USA, to send marines to change regimes we don't like.

Also, if we had hostile intentions, it wouldn't be INS Kalpeni there. That's a patrol boat.

It was'nt only PLOTE mercenaries there in Maldives; they had local affiliations. That is why they were there.
So India helped to preserve a democratic Govt. in Maldives.

INS Kalpeni is a Patrol Boat. But its a warship; while Maldives is .......
Do you remember the Panther? That was a gun boat too.

Ah, "regime change". Except that we ain't the USA.

That is also what everybody (including Indians) thought at the time of Op Cactus.

Precisely. The head of that democratically elected leader was calling for help from India from a military safehouse. We went in and assisted the Maldivian forces to prevent a coup.

If we went in now, we would be fighting the present govt, not helping it. That's a very different proposition.

Are we capable of doing it? Of course. Will we do it? No, we won't.

India has it image of a "soft power" to protect. We will not go in unless requested by the govt, or unless we are at war with a nation.

Invading a nation to change the govt is something that the US is known for, not India.

India has and will use other means; so quit worrying yourself.
Nothing to do with "Soft Power".
Soft Power is neither the eternal nor the ultimate tool of Strategy. Not even in India.

The golden rule in foreign policy and with all other things is " we should not do to others what we won't want them do to us" or in other words "if another country does to us what we do to others, we're not going to like it very much". We should not get involved in the internal affairs of other countries. We should only take care of them if they pose a security threat to us. The foreign policy is advocated by Thomas Jefferson "Honest trade and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none".
