What’s the story?
The Indian national football team have reached a 21-year high in the FIFA rankings as they have broken into the top 100. In the rankings released for the month of May earlier today, the Blue Tigers find themselves positioned 100, one place above their April ranking of 101st.

This amounts to a significant achievement for Stephen Constantine’s team, who, despite not playing a single match in April, have jumped above Malawi to find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

The context
India ranked 101st in the FIFA rankings for April, a 72-place jump from being 173rd in March 2015. The Blue Tigers last hit the top 100 in February 1996, when they were ranked an all-time high of 94.

It seems inconceivable how without playing a single match, India jumped one place to reach the top 100. But, other teams’ results also matter and Madagascar’s helping hand was very much necessary for India to break into the top 100.

The heart of the matter
It was already established that should Malawi, ranked 100th in April, fail to win both their African Nations Championship qualifiers against Madagascar, they would drop down a few places. Malawi contrived to lose both legs against Madagascar by 1–0 scorelines, which has catapulted India into 100th position in the FIFA rankings for this month.

What’s next?
With no matches scheduled for the month of May for Constantine’s men, it remains to be seen whether they can hold on to their lofty ranking for another month. In June, the Blue Tigers take on Lebanon in a friendly on 7th June before resuming their qualifying campaign for the 2019 Asian Cup against the Kyrgyz Republic at home on 13th June.

With both Lebanon and Kyrgyz Republic ranked worse than India, wins in both matches would result in little change in points gained by the Blue Tigers. That said, Constantine’s charges have won 11 of their 13 most recent matches, hence they will look to continue their good run of form in June as well.

Author’s take
India’s top 100 finish in the FIFA rankings for May isn’t a cause for much celebration, but it is an important landmark in the progress of the team under Constantine in recent months. There has been a change in approach from the experienced Englishman which has resulted in plenty of young blood being given chances, and judging by results and the progress up the FIFA ladder, this is a good time to be an Indian football team fan.

India's ranking will move up further in the coming months and years because of robust professional football league
with many past and present world ranked players. Also the enthusiasm and attendance of the football fans is great

India just doesn't have a football culture. The average Indian kid wants to become a cricketer.Good luck anyways.

Football is quite popular in Eastern + North Eastern parts of India and also some coastal areas like Goa.

But you are right vast hinterland and majority is cricket crazed....but its like chicken and the egg conundrum. Better success leads to better interest....or do you need interest to spur the success? It's balance between the two I think.

Tennis and Badminton were rarely played in India but now they are becoming quite popular after Indian sportspeople succeeded in them at highest level. Something similar happening with boxing and soccer now...I guess lets see where it goes.

You just need one Indian to become half decent in the top leagues and it'll change. A bit like with Japan with Nakata. Koreans are producing half decent players now too, though they were in the World Cup in the 1950s(unless my memory is playing with me).

Yah its early days regarding that...with Indian super league hopefully there will be change in nurturing the talent and then having right sort of foreign talent in team to take it further.

There simply was no money before to create this sort of scale (and investment per player) before (little money overall and also whats there went to cricket largely)....that is changing only now.

Its bangladesh ?

Also china it seems is nearly out of the 2018 world cup qualifying.
"Even after investing so many resources into getting better at football, China appears unlikely to achieve Xi Jinping's World Cup dream any time soon, particularly after suffering a crushing defeat against Iran on Tuesday which almost completely erases any chance of them reaching next year's tournament in Russia.

More than 100,000 fans packed into a 78,000-seat stadium in Tehran to watch as Chinese defenders bumbled their way into giving up a goal to Iran's Mehdi Taremi just after halftime. Iran then held on to win the crucial match 1-0."

Its quite shameful for a super power lije china not to even qualify , while iran qualifies consistently.
Guess you cant FAKE somethings.

Chinese football team is our national shame, we admit it. But still, overall, China is a sports superpower in this world.

Your opinion will change if you have seen an ISL match in Kerala blasters FC home ground

All thanks to ISL
By average attendence it's among the top 10 in the world

Can you explain the need to combine the Ileague and ISL? is that good? read that the I league winners will be relegated to the second division once the leagues r combined.. That is not good no?

Not many people watch the I league though compared to isl
I think the football association made the decision to combine them so that the I league teams can get out of the huge shadow created by ISL and do not get left out. Don't know about the second part

Kochi, Kolkata, New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati and Margao will be hosting the mega event in October.

Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Friday expressed happiness over the preparation for the Under- 17 FIFA World Cup in October and said both Kochi and Kolkata venues would be ready by May 30. Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan's preparation is well on track. The venue hosts the final of the mega event.

"I am quite satisfied with the progress here, though some finishing touches are needed. They will finish everything by May 30," Goel told a news conference after an inspection of the stadium and training centres at the Sports Authority of India Eastern Centre Complex. "At SAI Complex, some work related to changing room and floodlights are being done. I have given them instruction to finish work by May 30."

Goel earlier went to Kochi where he was disappointed with the progress work but Goel on Friday said they would also finish by May 30. "There has been a lot of delay in work at the Jawaharlal Nehru Athletic Stadium. But they have assured that latest by May 30 the work will be finished. I will come back again and play a demonstration match when the venue is ready. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking special interest. I want it to be organised in a proper way. We will finish the work by May 30 at any cost. We will coordinate from Delhi."

Goel, who will next head to Navi Mumbai and then Guwahati, said they would try to ensure that all stadiums are packed during the tournament as they have plan to engage 15,000 schools. "In FIFA preparation meetings, our full effort has been to ensure that not a single stadium remains empty," said Goel. "We want to see that the stadiums look small. We will try to ensure that the fever of football is spread across India.

"It's a great opportunity and proud moment for India that for the first time India will host the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Through this World Cup, we will touch 15,000 schools and will reach Mission 11 Million. We have also distributed football to Parliament members to promote the sport in their constituency. I will also have the same message for the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The good news is our ranking has progressed."
