Once again, I must thank you for your help. I now have more than sufficient material to complete my research with adequate references from the Hindu scriptures. I hope you will allow me the opportunity to reciprocate this kindness some time.

I did have all the relevant statements, however those recommended by those who practice the religion can obviously shed better light on how important these statements are with respect to common usage. And can better explain their role in theology.

Two beautiful excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita -

The first is about the mind of the Yogi:

Steadfast a lamp burns sheltered from the wind;
Such is the likeness of the Yogi’s mind
Shut from sense-storms and burning bright to Heaven.
When mind broods placid, soothed with holy wont;
When Self contemplates self, and in itself
Hath comfort; when it knows the nameless joy
Beyond all scope of sense, revealed to soul—
Only to soul! and, knowing, wavers not,
True to the farther Truth; when, holding this,
It deems no other treasure comparable,
But, harbored there, cannot be stirred or shook
By any. gravest grief, call that state "peace,"
That happy severance Yoga, call that man
The perfect Yogin!

and the second is about the cycle of birth and death -

He who shall say, "Lo! I have slain a man!"
He who shall think, "Lo! I am slain!" those both
Know naught! Life cannot slay. Life is not slain!
Never the spirit was born; the spirit shall cease to be never;
Never was time it was not; End and Beginning are dreams!
Birthless and deathless and changeless remaineth the spirit for ever;
Death hath not touched it at all, dead though the house of it seems!
Who knoweth it exhaustless, self-sustained,
Immortal, indestructible, — shall such
Say, "I have killed a man, or caused to kill?"

Nay, but as when one layeth
His worn-out robes away,
And, taking new ones, sayeth,
"These will I wear to-day!"
So putteth by the spirit
Lightly its garb of flesh,
And passeth to inherit
A residence afresh.

I say to thee weapons reach not the Life;
Flame burns it not, waters cannot o'erwhelm,
Nor dry winds wither it. Impenetrable,
Unentered, unassailed, unharmed, untouched,
Immortal, all-arriving, stable, sure,
Invisible, ineffable, by word
And thought uncompassed, ever all itself,
Thus is the Soul declared! How wilt thou, then, —
Knowing it so, — grieve when thou shouldst not grieve?
How, if thou hearest that the man new-dead
Is, like the man new-born, still living man —
One same, existent Spirit — wilt thou weep?
The end of birth is death; the end of death
Is birth: this is ordained! and mournest thou,
Chief of the stalwart arm! for what befalls
Which could not otherwise befall? The birth
Of living things comes unperceived; the death
Comes unperceived; between them, beings perceive:
What is there sorrowful herein, dear Prince?

For Mahayana Buddhism you should refer to the Heart Sutra or more properly Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra. As it says, the Heart Sutra, is the very heart of Buddhist thought.

you will find enough material there. google "Heart Sutra"

Hi,

I'm writing a research paper about the concept of change, self improvement, self empowerment and belief in oneself in religions. I've got the Abrahamic Religions covered but I can only find so many Hindu scriptures in English, a Hindu friend gave me the Ramayana, but it has limited content on the topics that concern me.
I request our Indian members to please post some quotes that you may remember from Hindu/Sikh or Buddhist religious scriptures. Don't forget to add a source for your quote, not necessarily a link or e-book. Just the name of the scripture is enough.

P.S: Although I'm already reading the Old and New Testaments, if you have any quotes from them, I'll happily accept them too.

Thank you,

Sir there is some excellent videos on Youtube or a good site you can try is this which will answer most questions you may have:

Om Dhauh Shaantirantarikssam Shaantih
Prthivii Shaanti Raapah Shaantirossadhayah Shaantih |
Vanaspatayah Shaantirvishvedevaah Shaantirbrahma Shaantih Sarvam Shaantih
Shaantireva Shaantih ||

Meaning:
Om. May there be peace in heaven.
May there be peace in the sky.
May there be peace on earth.
May there be peace in the water.
May there be peace in the plants.
May there be peace in the trees.
May there be peace in the Gods.
May there be peace in Brahman.
May there be peace in all.
May that peace, real peace, be mine.

1. THEN was not non-existent nor existent: there was no realm of air, no sky beyond it.
What covered in, and where? and what gave shelter? Was water there, unfathomed depth of water?
2 Death was not then, nor was there aught immortal: no sign was there, the day's and night's divider.
That One Thing, breathless, breathed by its own nature: apart from it was nothing whatsoever.
3 Darkness there was: at first concealed in darkness this All was indiscriminated chaos.
All that existed then was void and form less: by the great power of Warmth was born that Unit.
4 Thereafter rose Desire in the beginning, Desire, the primal seed and germ of Spirit.
Sages who searched with their heart's thought discovered the existent's kinship in the non-existent.
5 Transversely was their severing line extended: what was above it then, and what below it?
There were begetters, there were mighty forces, free action here and energy up yonder
6 Who verily knows and who can here declare it, whence it was born and whence comes this creation?
The Gods are later than this world's production. Who knows then whence it first came into being?
7 He, the first origin of this creation, whether he formed it all or did not form it,
Whose eye controls this world in highest heaven, he verily knows it, or perhaps he knows not.

This is a beautiful Vedic Hymn on Creation

The Bhagavad Gita: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one," a quote made famous by J. Robert Oppenheimer in reference to the atomic bomb.

Famous quote in the Gita.

One who does not hate anyone; is friendly and compassionate to all living beings; shares his belongings with others; has no sense of ownership; free from ego; even-minded in both happiness and distress; forgiving; tolerant in all situations; always satisfied; worships me with determination and devotion. Such a person is very dear to me.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 12.13-14)

one of my fave quotes in the Gita

“The soul is unborn, eternal, never takes birth, and never dies. The soul is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 2.20)

Just read Thirukkural it covers everything in the world and its secular nature it applicable to all religion. Each poem(kural) consists of only seven words total 1330 kural. It had been translated in to many languages after bible.

eg: akara mudhala ezuththellAm Adhi
bagavan mudhaRRE ulagu.

Translation:
'A' is the prime of all letters. The Source - the God is the prime of the world.

Notes:
i. All the letters are voiced subsequent to the letter "A" and hence we call them as
alphabets. For the world that came to existence there is One Who stood before
beginningless (and stands endless). That God is the ultimate Precedent of the world.

.
What are the three gates to hell?

“Lust, anger, and greed are the three gates that leads one to hell. One must give up these qualities.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 16.21)

.
Vidya dadati vinayam,
Vinaya dadati paatrataam,
paatratva dhanamaapnoti,
dhanaat dharmam tatatsukham.

Education gives Humility,
Humility gives Character,
from character one gets wealth,
from wealth one gets righteousness,
in righteousness there is joy.
