Hi,

I'm writing a research paper about the concept of change, self improvement, self empowerment and belief in oneself in religions. I've got the Abrahamic Religions covered but I can only find so many Hindu scriptures in English, a Hindu friend gave me the Ramayana, but it has limited content on the topics that concern me.
I request our Indian members to please post some quotes that you may remember from Hindu/Sikh or Buddhist religious scriptures. Don't forget to add a source for your quote, not necessarily a link or e-book. Just the name of the scripture is enough.

P.S: Although I'm already reading the Old and New Testaments, if you have any quotes from them, I'll happily accept them too.

Thank you,

Well Ramayana for all intents and purposes is a war tale - something like Illiad or Odyssey. Fing such quotes in war tales will not yield fruit.

Shrimad Bhagvad Gita is the best book if you hunt for the spiritual quotes. Get a good English transalation of it.

For example this quote, IMO, illustrates how man is but a tool who who comes into this world with nothing and eventually goes with nothing and all that happens in between is determined by Karma.

Whatever happened, happened for the good; whatever is happening, is happening for the good; whatever will happen, will also happen for the good only. You need not have any regrets for the past. You need not worry for the future. The present is happening...

What did you lose that you cry about? What did you bring with you, which you think you have lost? What did you produce, whichyou think got destroyed? You did not bring anything - whatever you have, you received from here. Whatever you have given, you have given only here. Whatever you took, you took from God. Whatever you gave, you gave to him. You came empty handed, you will leave empty handed. What is yours today, belonged to someone else yesterday, and will belong to someone else the day after tomorrow. You are mistakenly enjoying the thought that this is yours. It is this false happiness that is the cause of your sorrows.

If it does not offend your religious sentiments and you happen to go abroad like UK or US go to the nearest ISKON center and feel free to grill them. They will be the most courteous to help.

Main Buddhist quote is
"Buddham Sharanam gachchami.
Dhamman sharnam gachchhami
Sangham sharanam gachchhami"

I go for refuge in the Buddha.
I go for refuge in the Dharma.
I go for refuge in the Sangha.

I'm humbled by your gracious response, my friends, thank you.

Any inspirational quotes? Something that for once, gives man the reigns to his destiny. Makes him the master of the changes he wishes to bring.

Dharma is translated as ''religion'' here which is misleading.

Not from scriptures, but Gandhi said this about change

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world"

This one is from Gita.

Karmanyevadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana
ma karmaphalaheturbhurma te sango'astavakarmani"

In English translation:"Your should do your duty and shouldn't worry about the result. Neither the result of your action should be your motive, nor should you become inactive"

note:- Words seems lengthy in Sanskrit because multiple words are mostly combined into one word in Sanskrit.

Gayatri Mantra is considered most principle Verse of Hindus.

"Om bhurbhuvah swah, tatsaviturvarenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah prachodayat"

Meaning
Oh God, the Protector, the basis of all life, Who is self-existent, Who is free from all pains and Whose contact frees the soul from all troubles, Who pervades the Universe and sustains all, the Creator and Energizer of the whole Universe, the Giver of happiness, Who is worthy of acceptance, the most excellent, Who is Pure and the Purifier of all, let us embrace that very God, so that He may direct our mental faculties in the right direction.

I'm humbled by your gracious response, my friends, thank you.

My most favorite quote

"Karmani ave adhikars te
ma phalesu kadachana
ma karmaphal hetur bhoo
ma sangostu akramani”

Translation:
you have the power to act only
you do not have the power to influence the result
therefore you must act without the anticipation of the result
without succumbing to inaction

Source:
Bhagavad Gita

.
"Be fearless and pure; never waver in your determination or your dedication to the spiritual life. Give freely. Be self-controlled, sincere, truthful, loving, and full of the desire to serve...Learn to be detached and to take joy in renunciation. Do not get angry or harm any living creature, but be compassionate and gentle; show good will to all. Cultivate vigor, patience, will, purity; avoid malice and pride. Then, you will achieve your destiny." ~ Lord Krishna teaching from Bhagavad Gita

Of priests, O Arjuna, know Me to be the chief, Brhaspati, the lord of devotion. Of generals I am Skanda, the lord of war; and of bodies of water I am the ocean.

Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 10: The Opulence of the Absolute
