Indian Maruti/Suzuki tops the Sri Lankan car market

Toyota is leading the re-conditioned or imported used car segment. :kiss3:

Yeah, but all I am saying is what is written up there - in overall car sales, Toyota dominates.

The best selling model was the 'Alto' which sold around 600 to 850 units a month.

Among 'reconditioned' or used cars imported mainly from Japan, Toyota dominated, with more than 2,000 units being registered a month.

More Toyotas on the road, than there are Altos.

Which ends up in the conclusion that people would still buy cars (preferably Altos) if they did not have the choice of Toyotas. Which means that the Toyotas, if as readily available, as are the Altos, would replace the Altos.

So the logical conclusion is, people prefer Toyota saloons (I am guessing that's what they are buying) to mini Altos.

But after May, when 2,368 Toyota's were registered there has been a decline and accordingly only 1,705 in June and 1,316 in July have been registered. This drop has been resulted since rules of re-conditioned vehicle imports were tightened in April.

By next year 2012 or in 2013 Sri Lanka will suspend importing re-conditioned or imported used car segment.

Is n't the car in the pic sold as 'A-star' in India.
I know for a fact that the A-star sales in India have not taken off in India. So probably..................

Yes. It is A-star (short form of 'alto star'). Sales figures are not great Since its lower end versions are priced around 3.45 to 4.5 lakhs INR (ex showroom) and At that price range you have lot options from ford, chevrolet, Tata etc.

This is correct. There are a lot of Toyota on the road in SL. But heavy vehicles trucks/buses are TATA and Lanka Ashok Leyland.

I think it's about time Sri Lanka gets on with some home production.

It has been a market for all the international players for a very long time. Doesn't help a lot with all the money going out of the country.

The reliability of Japanese reconditioned cars is just legendary. Although, Indian trucks and buses do well in the market :D

The waiting period of Swift diesel in my city is close to 6 months.:hitwall:

I love my Dzire:smitten: It's mileage is as good as that of my Bullet

I was talking about Swift not Swift Dzire.

My post was based on experience of one of my uncle. When he booked for Swift diesel the dealer said that if he chose Dzire he can get instant delivery otherwise wait for 6 months, but he chose to wait.

Suzuki basically owns the company, right? It's not Indian anymore.

Yes Suzuki owns maruti, but that does not mean that Maruti is now a Japanese company,if you consider so that is equal to considering JLR as an Indian company and Skoda or Lamborghini as German companies.

micro cars is assembling old ssangyong(now mahindra's) models?

@Lankans:
* New cars are heavily taxed in countries like Sri Lanka?
* refurbished or "Japan" cars are famous among common people due to lesser price and reliability, machine precision(build quality) ?
* Maruti is seen as a "Indian" Car, since it is manufactured in India? Do SriLankans know that Maruti is Suzuki not "Maruti" as in 1980s
* is there a culture of owning brand new cars(considering Indian Cars are the reliable and Affordable new cars, next to original Euro-Jap imports) and selling off after the honeymoon time(2-4years), hence a healthy second hand market without bringing in euro-japan refurbished ones?
