Dude...constructs in biotech basically means the manipulation of bacteria to modify the gene....so usually a construct is a vector + gene of interest...Now if the prof wanted to jump into functional genomics and thinks that the student doesnt have enough time to pursue in it...his constructs which are property of the university because they paid for the chemicals and the technology are the real OWNERS of the construct...Plus making a construct is not SOMETHING great (Uni in Belgium sells their vectors as it is patented and people around the world buy it to use it) unless he discovered a new vector! So I dont see how he MISUNDERSTOOD that he could carry his constructs around out of the uni?!

KRAIT is it true that in India when you make something or use something for your studies you can take it out of the institute? Hell I will have to even return my laptop to the institute after the end of PhD
