The unit cost of 140 Russian Kamov Ka-226T ‘Hoodlum’ light multirole helicopters that India plans on building indigenously for its military is nearly double that of 60 similar platforms it proposes to acquire alongside in flyaway condition.
Industry officials estimate the cost of each indigenously produced twin-engine Ka-226T helicopter produced under a technology transfer arrangement at about USD11 million apiece, compared to about USD6 million for one manufactured in Russia.
They said this high price differential was primarily responsible for delays by Moscow in finalising the deal with the recently instituted India-Russia Helicopters Limited Company joint venture (JV) to supply 200 Ka-226T helicopters to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army (IA).
