Indian intelligence agencies reach out for snooping software Galileo at Defexpo 2014 in New Delhi
Italian company’s snooping software can be handy in cyber warFacing increasing cyber attacks from China and Pakistan, India now wants to be on the offensive.
Indian intelligence agencies are reaching out to Hacking Team, an Italian company of so-called ethical hackers, who have set up a stall at Defexpo 2014 in New Delhi. This is the first time the company is taking part in an expo in India.
Officials from various state and central agencies like Intelligence Bureau and Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) have visited the stall in the past three days. This comes at a time when a tri-service cyber command is awaiting clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security, headed by the prime minister, to counter the growing threat of cyber warfare. The 10-year-old Italian company is selling its products to do “offensive” cyber security. Defexpo is Asia’s biggest land and naval warfare exhibition.
Hacking Team was founded in 2003 in Milan by a team of over 40 professionals and the company claims its technology is used to fight crime in six continents. The company claims to have sold its flagship product, Galileo, a software, only to governments to empower law-enforcement agencies to remotely track suspects.
Galileo can monitor and log any action performed on a PC like web browsing, keystrokes in any unicode language, printed documents, chat, email, instant messaging, remote audio spy, and Skype conversations, both in the Windows and the Mac architecture, the company claims. It can also track any action on a smartphone, be it iOS, Windows, BlackBerry or Symbian, apart from intercepting call signal/location info and voice calls, and doing remote audio spy function.
Galileo attacks the target’s device by means of several vectors. When pointed out that hacking is not legal in India, one of the executives said that, for any agency, trailing terror funding is more important than rule of ethics.
Many functions
The Hacking Team describes its product as “spyware, Trojan Horse, a bug, a monitoring tool, an attack tool and a tool for taking control of end points.” The company claims to have business in 30 countries.
