Large white sheets appear to have been used to cover the slum dwellings along the route followed by Boris Johnson during his visit to Gujarat, India on Thursday.
Some videos and pictures posted on social media by local journalists appear to show white sheets covering the side of the road near Mahatma Gandhi’s former home in Ahmedabad, which was visited by the UK Prime Minister on the first day of his tour of India. .
Later that day other images showed the sheets coming down from their large metal frames, revealing once again the view of the slum backyard.
There is no official confirmation that the Gujarat government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made these arrangements for Mr Johnson’s visit, and state and city officials told the Independent. that they knew no plan obscures the view of the slums.

A video posted on the internet by filmmaker Vinod Kapri and reportedly recorded Thursday in Ahmedabad shows a white cloth blocking the roadside view as normal traffic continues in the busy city.
Addressing Mr Monti, who hails from Gujarat and has increasingly offered to the state as a stopover for foreign officials to visit in recent years, Capri wrote: “You have been Gujarat’s chief minister for 12 years. You have been the Prime Minister of the country @narendramodi for 8 years. However, what are you ashamed to show to @BorisJohnson? ”
A later video, released Thursday night by a journalist named Umashankar Singh of the NDTV news channel, showed the white sheets coming down from their scaffolding, revealing shacks and parked scooters in the back.
“The curtains are gone as Johnson leaves,” he wrote on Twitter on Thursday after the prime minister left for Delhi for talks with Monti on Friday.

Johnson had landed in the western Indian state of Gujarat at 10.30am. local time on Thursday and was received by Prime Minister Bupendra Patel. His itinerary in Ahmedabad included a visit to the famous Sabarmati Ashram, the old home of Mahatma Gandhi, where he posed sitting with Gaddy’s famous Charkha (spinning wheel).
In his opening remarks to Mr Monti during his reception ceremony in Delhi on Friday morning, Mr Johnson commented on how much he had enjoyed the ‘fantastic welcome’ in Gujarat and said he would not necessarily take it τού everywhere in the world. “.
Mr Johnson’s visit to India came amid calls for him to return to his homeland after being fined by police for violating his own Covid lockdown rules.
This is not the first time that measures have been taken to block the view of slums during a foreign official’s visit to Ahmedabad. When then-US President Donald Trump visited Gujarat in early 2020 for a stadium event with Monti called the “Namaste Trump” rally, the Ahmedabad municipal company built a 4-meter-high wall to hide a section of slums along the way. of the American leader. the city.

Johnson’s own visit to India was already embroiled in controversy after he visited a JCB factory, a day after the same company’s equipment was used to demolish mostly poor Muslim homes in the Jahangirpur area of North Delhi. incidents of religious violence over the weekend.

Par for the course for developing countries. In the 90s China did similar things when provincial leaders visited unsavory parts of a city.

Slums are a reality in even the most developed countries, it’s not expensive for government to redevelop it and give them houses, but then it will be considered as a special treatment for them and others will demand too, it’s not financially feasible to redevelop makeshift housing of migrant construction workers in every corner of the country. Slums in Mumbai are getting redeveloped quickly because they have financial value for government and real estate companies which may not be present in other parts of the country.

I am reading you for one yr, joined today.

I hope you found some of my posts and threads enjoyable. :)

Gathered a bit of guts after drinking scotch for the first time.

LOL. I think you will be amused to encounter another Indian student, @KedarT, who always tries to evade people who want to entice him to have a sip of alcohol. :D

But I dont understand why you people always blind about reality and resort to pettiness.
Our countries are poor and if we want to survive we have to work together, this place is good start.
We are anonymous, lets be ourselves and let's try to speak true, about true issues.

Absolutely ! There is much pettiness on the forum, too many people especially South Asians wanting to wage war against each other despite their own countries not quite being culminations of human intellect. As you may know I have written of simple solutions to a few issues, solutions that can be acceptable to any person anywhere who is willing to be calm and rational and non-nationalist. One such is about Kashmir and this is from 2020 so I may have to add some more text to it :

Jamahir, they are gunda. Today in our campuses, it is about numbers, 6out of 8 boys hostels of our uni has gunda leader. I doesnt take much imagination because it was like this always. It has just become more crude.
Before, it was only similar promises, betrayals. Can you imagine this long congress rule without ideologically blind dumb mfkers blind to everything taking place around them.

The gundas are there in colleges mostly because the college administration and the civilian administration generally won't allow progressive groups to form unions. Look at JNU where the government's goons attack the progressive students and the university administration tries at every turn to sabotage the progressives' work. So when there are no progressives or the progressives are subdued the vacuum is filled up by gundas.

But yes, sometimes the progressive groups themselves get corrupted. Some years ago I worked in an ITES company and there was a young chap there who had the build of Daya from CID. He told me that in his college days in Kerala he was part of the SFI ( for others the SFI is the student wing of the Communist Party of India ) and he said he had become disillusioned somewhat because the SFI had some people who used the group influence in society to further their personal interests.

Do you remember lokpal bill?
Whatever happen to it?

Well, the Lokpal Bill was a nice movement but it would have been a flickering candle in a chaotic society. The unnecessary chaos in India has to be cleaned first and then the Lokpal can be existent among the people's committees overseeing the conduct in society. That societal cleansing will be through radical change in the political and socio-economic systems which will make the society serene, harmonious and rid of the unnecessary corruption, drama and violence inherent to the current anti-democratic system in India. So the political system replacement I describe in this thread and the socio-economic system replacements I describe in this thread. These are very simple systems and in fact the political system has worked in the Libyan Jamahiriya for more than three decades and is being implemented in Venezuela. The socio-economic system is a stage between Capitalist society and Communist society such that there is a money system ( as against Communism's desire to abolish money ) but it is an evolved money system and the entire system is structured so that the economic classes in Capitalism ( rich, middle, poor ) are abolished and that each citizen has potentially equal access to all the goods and services in the society.

So Lokpal is fantastic but will work better after radical societal change.

Why no importance to environment?

Absolutely ! The three top polluters in the world are India, China and USA and the main reason is the personal transport vehicle industry which pollutes directly, secondarily and tertiarily and the three countries in a frenzy to acquire personal cars and two-wheelers. There are glaciers melting faster even in South America because of the pollution created by these three countries. I made this proposal :

Btw don't worry, the world will have to resort to communist ideology, no matter what.
The way population growing, you never know couple of deacades and disasters down the line, the resources and environment of this world might not support human life.

Indeed. For example, uncontrolled population growth and reckless, unscientific and disharmonious city planning and climate change is causing Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia to sink :
The main cause is uncontrolled ground water extraction, but it has been exacerbated by the rising Java Sea due to climate change. Beyond that, its air and ground water are heavily polluted, it floods regularly and its streets are so clogged that it is estimated congestion costs the economy $4.5 billion a year.26-Jan-2022

Indonesia's capital is rapidly sinking into the sea - NPR

I think this is one of the reasons that Indonesia is building a new administrative capital.

And agreed, Communism when implemented in true form realizes harmony among humanity and with the other elements of Nature. Below is the simple description of Communism on Google :
Communism is a philosophical, social, political, and economic ideology and movement whose goal is the establishment of a communist society, namely a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common or social ownership of all property and the absence of social classes, money, and the state. Wikipedia
How can any rational and simple person disagree with these humane and wonderful bunch of thoughts ?

This is not a sheet ..this is gandhi jee ki dhoti..

Was that idiotic statement required ? Can I turn back and say "No, it is the cloth from which those shabby loose Pakistani male salwar kameez are stitched" ?

shining india, it so progressed they hide it from boris.
Slumdia, proposed new name for India.

What a repugnant justification for homelessness.

. . .
They’re temporary settlements of construction workers, apparently Boris went to GIFT City and there are some temp makeshift housing for them which maybe the ones covered.

Else I’ve travelled extensively to Gujarat and can say its much better economically than the so-called Tier-1 cities.

The building looks good, the roads are narrow and should have service rds, and with parking areas.

Compare this with Bahria Town(it's a city) about 25 Kms from Karachi. Think it is about 20 sq.kms. in area.

5+1 shoulder lane, 11 lanes in total of the main boulevard.

Than 2+2 lanes of service rds. on either sides and with it Parking area designated(in Pink color).

I think this is one of the reasons that Indonesia is building a new administrative capital.

Jakarta is sinking fast only in coastal region with high density of population. This is due to under ground water extraction, but it is not something unpreventable since the solution is pipe water system and currently we dont have enough of them. But effort to address the issue is already made and we are not lack of the water source AlhamduliLLAH. Any way, Tokyo, has the same problem before and now they have solved the problem.

Coast line in Jakarta, heavily populated region

Your source saying our Jakarta underground water is polluted is big lies. Who wrote it ? Indian or Westerner journalist ????

I live in Jakarta and use underground water since pipe water doesnt have strong pressure in my place here. No problem what so ever with the water, it is clean and healthy.

------------------------------------

The reason we move capital city to Kalimantan island is not because of Jakarta sinking problem, but more to balance development between Java and Non Java and provide unity among Indonesians as it is actually the center of Indonesia if we see the geographic location. Jakarta will remains to be business center of Indonesia inshaAllah, similar position like New York to USA

Just think with logic, if we want to move our business center from Jakarta, it should not be in Kalimantan island, which is in majority is still jungle, it should be in Patimban, West Java, where it is close to main industry. West Java also less populated where the strategic location near coast line is also less populated and many new modern cities is currently being developed there ( and planned to be developed due to its strategic position )

Patimban deep port project, West Java

Banten province, next to Jakarta can also be a location if that is the case, less populated areas
