Indian Govt to develop own operating system

I know near to zero about hardware design and what exactly is the kind of capabilities required and all... but still one thing I think is that if done that would be an achievement ... we certainly can brag about this I hope...

and I hope we do have mature industries which can design... but as you said may not be manufacturing yet... thanks for the info Sukhoi30_MKI...

I think India has the capability to design the microprocessor we are second to none in this field

.
yep I do mention about the hardware changes in my post...

and anyways GoI is going to make a processor based on MIPS it seems... so Linux kernel already exists for this...

and making a simple kernel is not a big deal.... you can simply google and find things and do that... not a big deal... however writing new kernel from scratch and solve each every problems and bring it to the level of present day kernel is not a task of university students and I think you are not implying they did such things...

I am only talking about the remake of same functionality.

I have worked in Wipro for 3 years in semiconductor field they have some patents related to signal processing.
No need to under estimate any thing regarding Wipro or any other indian company with out knowing.

Yes I wanted to say this thing to Shaktiman2010, but alas I don't have patents so far, so I could not say what you said because he was pulling patents... even I worked in Wipro for 3 and a half years .... it is a diverse company... everything from testing to your semiconductors are being done there... I don't know why some people have stereo typic opinions about Wipro or say services companies at all...

NEW DELHI: The government has set in motion an ambitious plan to develop its own software and end the reliance on foreign operating systems and anti-virus products after growing worries over the spurt in cyber attacks on Indian establishments.

The government formed a high-level taskforce in February to devise a plan for building indigenous software, said a senior intelligence official who is a member. The panel will also suggest ways to conduct third-party audits on existing software in government offices to prevent online sabotage attempts until the software’s launch, he said.

The overwhelming belief among government bosses is that an indigenous low-grade, but clean, software could nix the chances of foreign states infiltrating the computers of key Indian establishments and compromising the country’s security. “A sanitised, lower level operating system and application software may be preferred to the advanced versions, which necessarily require access to internet for upgrades,” the official said. The new software could be deployed in key departments that have been under constant cyber attacks. The taskforce also includes officials of the Prime Minister’s Office as well as defence, home and telecom & IT ministries.

The move to constitute the taskforce comes after the defence ministry raised concerns over use of anti-virus products of foreign vendors in the wake of a series of attacks on its systems by China-based hackers.

The technical arm of intelligence agencies too have objected to the use of foreign-made operating systems. Last December, PMO computers were attacked by hackers traced back to China. Similarly, hackers from Pakistan and terrorist organisations too have stepped up attacks on Indian websites in recent years. The taskforce is expected to submit its recommendations by June.

Operating system and anti-virus software makers said their products were completely safe. No company official spoke on record. The government is key customer, and sales to its departments are a big driver of revenues. Even so, some welcomed the move.

“It’s prudent for the government to develop an open source-based operating system on which it has total control. Codes for even anti-virus software and processors are available which can be customised,” said a technical head of a US-based network security giant.

The government’s move shines a light on a major chink in India’s technological armour. Despite home to nearly 10% of the world’s software developer base, the country still lacks an operating system or security product of repute. India is now making a late scramble to join nations that own both hardware and software technology critical for the safe upkeep of their defence, space and nuclear programmes. The government recently sanctioned Rs 50 crore to design an indigenous microprocessor.

The government’s unease with foreign technology and hardware has been on the rise in recent years. Recently, it warned telcos against installation of foreign gear. Last week, junior minister for communications & information technology Sachin Pilot told the Rajya Sabha about several measures the government has taken to detect and prevent cyber attacks.

No sensitive information will be stored on systems connected to the internet, while ministries and departments have been told to carry out regular IT systems audits. The government has also established a Crisis Management Plan against cyber attacks to be implemented by all central ministries, state governments and critical sectors, he said.

Advanced Neumarical Research and Analysis Group (ANURAG)

Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group (ANURAG) is a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Located in Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad, it is involved in the development of computing solutions for numerical analysis and their use in other DRDO projects.ANURAG was established on May 2, 1988, to support aeronautical design work, with the mandate of executing specific, time-bound projects leading to the development of custom designed computing systems and software packages for numerical analysis and other applications.

Microprocessor Design and Development.

ANURAG has designed and developed general-purpose microprocessors- ANUPAMA and ABACUS. ANUPAMA is a 32-bit RISC processor, and works at 33 MHz clock speed. The complete software development tool kit is available for application development. A single-board computer based on ANUPAMA is available for evaluation and software development. ANUPAMA is also available as an IP core.

ABACUS is a 32-bit processor for multi-tasking applications with virtual memory support. It is designed around ANUPAMA core with additions like MMU, two levels of cache, double precision FPU, SDRAM controller. The IP core of ABACUS is available in Verilog RTL code. This processor is suited for desktop applications. Complete software platform is available for ABACUS processor and a single board computer with ABACUS is implemented. Linux Kernel is ported.

Areas of work

ANURAG helps design and develop advanced computing systems. Much of this research is conducted in state-of-the art concepts like parallel architectures, etc, in order to build up a technology base in these areas. Its areas of work are:

1. Parallel processing technology.
2. System engineering, integration.
3. General purpose microprocessors.
4. 1 micrometre CMOS fabrication technology.
5. Design and development of VLSI chips & SOC development.
6. Processor related technology.
7. System software development for custom made processors

Products

PACE (Processor for Aerodynamic Computations and Evaluation), developed by ANURAG, is a loosely coupled, message-passing parallel processing supercomputer. PACE was originally designed to cater to the Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) needs in aircraft design. It can also be used for other fields such as weather forecasting, automobile & civil engineering design and Molecular Biology. These systems have been built using VME-bus based Pentium processor boards, ATM switches and Reflective Memory communication hardware.

In 1987, India decided to launch a national initiative in supercomputing to design, develop and deliver a supercomputer in the gigaflops range. Complementary projects were initiated in various labs, ANURAG being one of them. PACE was unveiled by then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in April 1995.

In late 1998, ANURAG developed the 15 times more powerful "Pace Plus 32", which can be used to support missile development, as well as other fields. A 128-node PACE++ system, built using Pentium processor based VME boards was unveiled by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in January 2004. The performance of this system is 50 Gigaflops (sustained performance). It has been installed at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. At present work is in progress on parallel processing system based on Linux clusters targeted to deliver 1 teraflop performance.

ANAMICA
ANAMICA (ANURAG's Medical Imaging and Characterization Aid) is a DICOM compliant three-dimensional medical visualization software for data obtained from any medical imaging system like MRI, CT and Ultrasound. The software has two-dimensional and three-dimensional visualisation techniques to visualize the images in various ways. The sequence of images obtained from any imaging system by scanning of a single patient is packed to form a three-dimensional grid. The software has also been modified for accepting data from Industrial CT systems.

General purpose microprocessors

ANURAG has designed and developed general-purpose microprocessors- ANUPAMA and ABACUS. ANUPAMA is a 32-bit RISC processor, and works at 33 MHz clock speed. The complete software development tool kit is available for application development. A single-board computer based on ANUPAMA is available for evaluation and software development. ANUPAMA is also available as an IP core.

ABACUS is a 32-bit processor for multi-tasking applications with virtual memory support. But still for documents (say word or XL) etc the openoffice or other softwares in opensource stands no chance in front of Microsoft Office...

Open Document Formats anyone??? Do you want to rely on a closed standard to store your information in? What happens when the company stops supporting that data format?

Personally, in my view, GoI should keep this whole project away from Open-source bullshit. Though, I don't have big expectations from a puppet(MMS) government. They will soon outsource this to some foreign company JV.

Better use Linux kernel and modify it to suit Indian needs, make 3 to 4 versions of it, based on space, Army, embedded and civilian uses. And, after that develop full infrastructure for UI development based on latest touchscreen and security systems.

I hope, they don't take this project into gutter by taking it to nanha-munha foolish substandard programmers(open-source lobby). That will end up as another project with no uniformity of standards across the board. Also, after initial 4-5 years, the project will die as initial euphoria of national project will end and quality programmers will go away to unkill land to serve their new father Microsoft.

And, story goes on.

Those who are lecturing here for going to "open-source" route, are not aware of Indian mentality. Indians don't work for free or charity.

Generally, Indians(With brains) prefer to work for West and get paid, than to work free of charge for India. So, cut the crap(open-source route) and lets get it done in commercial way, by a team of experts made from across country.

Also, linux kernel wasn't developed by some "scattered" people across the internet but the core work was done by a single guy. And, its very essential to keep such work within a team. Otherwise, it becomes unmanageable and doesn't remain cohesive.

Also, this is a project of national importance. Its not being done for charity or to satisfy the emotional diarrhea of some kids on internet.

That is so full of BS. You sir have no idea about how open source works.

.
If security is the concern it should be a closed system unlike linux.

Security through obscurity is not real security. It is wrong to say that open source applications are not as safe as closed source applications. Infact, I would say the exact opposite is true since the code is reviewed by more people.

.
If security is the concern it should be a closed system unlike linux. Again then you have to develop all the applications or atleast modify them and if you are not willing to do that then linux is good enough. For winux guys its already there check ubuntu.

Who so ever saying Closed system is foolproof is utterly wrong!! That is the reason most of the encryption technologies are public like MD5, SHA 1 and RSA.

I have worked in Wipro for 3 years in semiconductor field they have some patents related to signal processing.
No need to under estimate any thing regarding Wipro or any other indian company with out knowing.

There are 10 patents assigned to Wipro in the US patent database. Details below (looks like there is some R&D going on there).

1 7,702,803 Security enhancement for SNMPv2c protocol
2 7,675,847 Hardware implementation of a programmable FFT based on a half length FFT core
3 7,660,782 Architecture for master data management in an enterprise
4 7,657,498 Business-aligned organizational knowledge management system, framework, and tools for capture and dissemination of explicit and tacit knowledge of business objectives and management strategy articulated in problem statements
5 7,646,695 Molecular data storage device and method thereof
6 7,630,367 Approach for fast IP address lookups
7 7,627,303 Signal downconverter
8 7,439,813 Method and system for generating carrier frequencies for UWB application
9 7,379,417 Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmitter system and VLSI implementation thereof
10 5,987,513 Network management using browser-based technology

Just to not get carried away Microsoft has 15,156 issued patents, Oracle has 1,717 patents and Chinese firm Huawei has 282 patents, Lenovo has 352 patents. Infosys of India has 9 patents, Wipro 10, TCS has 0 patents. Indian companies are certainly behind on Intellectual Property. Large Indian companies are abysmally behind IP creation. This gap needs to be addressed.
