Indian Govt to develop own operating system

The Indian government reportedly plans to bring together top engineers to design what is tentatively being called the "India microprocessor."

One of the design programme's goals is helping to ward off what the government sees as the growing security threat poised by using commercial microprocessors in military, telecommunications and space systems.

According to a report in The Economic Times, the MPU design will be overseen by a new entity called the Zerone Corp., with an initial government investment of 20 crore ($200 million).

Engineers from various Indian research and technical institutes will work together on the chip design project, which will be managed by the federal Department of Information Technology.

The report, quoting unnamed sources, said a draft proposal will be presented soon to cabinet ministers seeking project funding. The report also said that a proposal mentioned that "unless India has its own microprocessor, we can never ensure that networks [and weapons] are not compromised."

Designers will likely adopt Sun Microsystems' OpenSparc processor design technology (the open-source version of Sun's UltraSPARC T1 and T2 microprocessors) along with the Linux OS and MySQL open-source database software. The government is also reportedly concerned about future availability of foreign chip technologies. That concern prompted it to set up Zerone, which is looking to recruit 400 designers.

Poornima Shenoy, president of the India Semiconductor Association, said national security concerns dictate the need for a homegrown chip design. "It will also catalyze the local industry built around design activities," Shenoy said.

A senior chip industry executive here familiar with government programmes told EE Times that the government's plan was flawed. "It is a mere regurgitation of old plans that went nowhere. When Intel x86 technology and Sun's Sparc technology were offered to the respective government departments in the past, they [did] not even bother to reply," he said. :angry:

"Why can't we get x86 technology and design it? Or get an ARM core and design around it? You do not need 20 crore ($200 million) to design a chip. A few engineers from a local company like Wipro can design one." the executive said.

India's chip design industry focuses heavily on captive chip designs for overseas customers. Hence, these companies have no claim on intellectual property developed during the design process. :agree:


The report said Zerone's revenues would come from microprocessor sales and support along with providing training for future chip designers. India also lacks a major chip foundry. The report did not address whether the government would use an overseas foundry to fabricate the projected microprocessor.

I dont think designing a processor is costly. I believe its the manufacturing that costs a lot. The manufacturing plants cost way too much.

I have gone through ur many post and seriously you need a therapist. In most of the posts you have made you have criticized India/DRDO/Army I doubt ur flag and nationality.

You should not make racist comments lie "coolie". It was the same racist term which forced Mahatma Gandhi to go for the protecst in South Africa, if you have read history.

Indian companies deals in such stuff and its easy for them and economical too. Just go and search Google.

Its good for Internal Security ... Well I dnt think OS is problem cause in IT field every one know Indian capabilities . We have to work only on microprocessor

Guys there is not much to brag about in creating yet another OS.... NO NEED FOR CHEST THUMPING... :hitwall:


This is not some great thing as some people might want to think...

The kernel is already there... the NSA of US government has already developed SELinux for secure policies of an OS under GPL License... may be more time has to be spent for designing how to use the security framework which is already available... that is all... or may be if government has specific security needs which is not already solved (I doubt this highly) then it might have to enhace the SELinux framework or may be a new security framework but this in my gut feeling is not the case...

For GUI we already have Gnome kind of stuff... so this is only a matter of download from open source build it using cross compilation tools and start running it...


If at all you are going to develop your own hardware then the BSP and porting the kernel and drivers might be a challenging one... but I don't see the necessity for it...

Guys (atleast KillBill) and other CSE engineers who work/know system side please support me... else we might go on and start thinking that we are doing something great...

But one thing I will tell you Pakistan may not have even this kind of capability.... :flame:

Just because I say that GoI planning to develop its own OS is not a big thing to brag about don't think I am not an Indian...

If anybody is still in doubt then please read the following

OS, of course, is a piece of cake. A guy at my university made one (Kernel) another team wrote a revolutionary GUI for Linux kernel. I my self worked on OS161 :P

I was all interested in Microprocessor Development. And you should know better that if the Processor Architecture is different then you'd have to write new Kernel.

yep I do mention about the hardware changes in my post...

and anyways GoI is going to make a processor based on MIPS it seems... so Linux kernel already exists for this...

and making a simple kernel is not a big deal.... you can simply google and find things and do that... not a big deal... however writing new kernel from scratch and solve each every problems and bring it to the level of present day kernel is not a task of university students and I think you are not implying they did such things...

There are lot of things which the designers has to consider like
1) Technology libraries eg: 45 nanometer or less than that.
2) Speed at which the mic processor works.
3) Number of million gates which it can accomodate
4) Total amount of internal Ram required
5) Requirement of co processor for doing math calculations which will boost the over all efficiency of the mic proc.
6) Power consumption of the mic processor.

After design most important part is verification of the design both functionality and Timing analysis are done here, before the manufacturing. Finding bugs and fixing at this stage will reduce the risks in the later stages.

After the verification several Masks are developed one for each layer. There are lot of steps in this process which is called ASIC back end design and each and every step needs verification extensively. parasitic capacitances and mask defects are to be fixed here.

For implementing the design India needs a manufacturing foundry which in the world a few countries have right now

After that final verification will be done on the board with test set up.

I know near to zero about hardware design and what exactly is the kind of capabilities required and all... but still one thing I think is that if done that would be an achievement ... we certainly can brag about this I hope...

and I hope we do have mature industries which can design... but as you said may not be manufacturing yet... thanks for the info Sukhoi30_MKI...

I have worked in Wipro for 3 years in semiconductor field they have some patents related to signal processing.
No need to under estimate any thing regarding Wipro or any other indian company with out knowing.
