NEW DELHI: Hours before they were to be sent to the gallows, two Indian nationals got a fresh lease of life in Kuwait. Thanks to the efforts of Indian diplomats in Kuwait, Suresh Shanmugasundaram and Kalidas Chellaiyan, who were convicted of murder, were given a reprieve.
The two Chennai residents were arrested in 2008 for the murder of a Sri Lankan woman. Despite legal assistance by the embassy, the two were convicted by the Court of First Instance on March 3, 2009, official sources said.
The death sentence was upheld by the court of appeal. Their execution was fixed for June 18, even after their relatives paid blood money to the family of the murdered woman.
"It was at this stage the Indian mission in Kuwait redoubled its efforts and sought the intervention of the minister of justice, the minister of Awqaf and Islamic affairs and the minister of Amiri Diwan. These strenuous efforts seem to have resulted in suspension of the execution sentence on June 16, just 48 hours prior to the execution," sources said.
