The issue here, IMHO, arose following the use of VoIP softwares like Skype by the perpetrators of the Mumbai massacre. If you all would recollect, Skype was the medium which the handlers based in Pakistan used to monitor and direct the terrorists in Mumbai. Apparently the GoI agencies got speedy approval and compliance from the companies to intercept and record those calls.

However, GoI now wants to monitor all VoIP calls made to and from India in real time. Just like NSA does in US, Indian agencies want companies to comply and cooperate with them in order to help monitor and prevent any such untoward communications. The "threats" that these companies get from India are just to make them tow GoI's line. And they will do that. As simple as that. And I seriously hope that this is all there is to it. If it turns out any other way, I am going to protest!

This is unlike in other countries, which have banned such websites all together in the name of blasphemy and national security interests.

By touching the tail why do a few members feel they know the elephant?

Call interception is a major way of survelliance. This is a matter of National Security be it India or China .... DONT MIX IT WITH CENSORSHIP.

India is a Democracy with True freedom to expression and speech... Being an IT Hub can u even imagine ur wildest dreams that Gmail or Skype is blocked ?

Now this has to be the Difficulty in intercepting calls via VoIP... If a terrorist used BlackBERRY AND cOMMITS A CRIME WHICH REMAINS UNTRACED DO THE FACT THAT VOIP WAS THE COMMUNICATION CHANNEL .. ISNT GOVT. BOUND TO ACT ??? BE IT INDIAN/PAKISTANI/CHINESE GOV. ???

National security is above all especially when 26/11 was a recent incident.

Before speaking stupid stuff of 'india being in the same boat' ... Do understand what the news is actually about.

@v9s...

After posting a news do read what it means.

Its NOT the INTERNET CONTENT being OBJECTED but the VOIP Channel for Making Calls that is difficult to trace.

INTERNET is NOT EQUAL TO VOIP ... Hope u understand. That.

:) Pakistani courts and Govt next time should incorporate the words "National Security" instead of blasphemy to ban gmail, skype, google next time just like India ;)

.
it just a way to earn money......all indian know the working style of A.Raja(cabinet minister in MCIT). so worry after given bribe to minister all will be remain same..

. .
So it will be the free calls in gtalk , skype and blackberry that is getting banned..

hmm atleast yahoo voice chat will be there .. :sigh:

.
I strongly disagree with 'money game' though the issue might end up in the same.

This is a real threat. I dont think we need another 26/11 to learn that Terroists using Garmin GPS cant use a BlackBerry to plan and execute a similar incident.

No harm in doing this if the reasons actually are security concerns.

TO all Readers...

THIS IS 'NOT' ABOUT INTERNET WEBSITE CENSORSHIP BUT ....

THE VOIP SERVICE OFFERED BY THESE SITES.

GMAIL IS NOT BEING OBJECTED BUT THE 'DIFFICULT TO TRACE' CALLS VIA GTALK/BB/SKYPE ARE BEING OBJECTED.... AND AS OF NOW ONLY A CLARIFICATION HAS BEEN ASKED.

These measures never really work against the terrorists because they have their own line of communications . Only people to be affected by these measures are ordinary Joe . The question is where does it end ?
Internet is only one among many networking frameworks. Two remotely located communication devices can communicate with each other without making use of the internet while remaining highly encrypted. This won't even require commonly used Microsoft API. What will the government IT guys do to counter this ?

. .
Can you explain in detail.

As far as I know only professional millitary has its own lines of communication.

There are plenty of Ham radios and other radio wave based communication systems . You can even buy a miniature one in toy shop nearby.
