Its a global social issue and this is according to 2014 UN report. Rape is the major problem in conflict zones recently even in Ukraine some cases has took place.


The report focuses on 19 countries engulfed in conflict or trying to recover from fighting where sexual violence including rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution and forced pregnancy

It lists 45 groups in Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Congo, Iraq, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan and Syria as well as Boko Haram in Nigeria that are "credibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape" in conflict — 13 of them for the first time

In Colombia, the report said, "women working with displaced communities and calling for land restitution have been targeted by armed groups and subjected to repeated sexual assault."

In the Central African Republic, the report said 2,527 cases of conflict-related sexual violence were documented in 2014, adding that "all parties have used sexual violence to subjugate and humiliate opponents."

In Sudan's western Darfur region, it said the number of displaced civilians has increased over the past year and so have reports of sexual violence.

And in South Sudan, it said sexual violence remains prevalent — including gang rape, castration, forced nudity and forced abortion — which is "exacerbated by impunity and a militarized society in which gender inequality is pronounced."

Its very strange for me when some members try to term rape is the biggest problem in India . Cant the whole world see that if just one rape case occurs in India . Government, Media and Indians all come on one platform to condemn such acts.

Capital punishment is mainly for terror related crimes in India but Indian system has hanged Dhananjoy Chatterjee in 2004 and we all saw how the rapist hanged himself in jail in 2013.

It is sensationalized at times especially by media be they foreign. Statistically we are in the dark in % of sexual violence etc... but the numbers are not bad as they appear. Traditionally India has women prominent roles, all though sheltered. The women in India are sheltered, less women at bars or clubs, means less rapes etc...

Any negative news from India spreads to the world only after mass protests against that crime in India, be it the Delhi rape case or the dadri lynching. A group of persons commit the crime and thousands come to the streets to protest against it. The group of person are caught and prosecuted. But the only news you get to hear is about the crime, not the protests, not the sentencing.

Similarly in the case of Pakistan, after the killing of Salman Taseer, and horrific accounts of Baccha Bazi and mass killing of Shias, there were millions who came to the street to protest, but nobody noticed. Right?

This slander campaign just targeting India, while closing the eyes for crimes happening elsewhere with much more regularity, is not helping the problem at all!

Although statistically there are less instances in India per capita (I hate this word because even one is one too many), many outside India came to know about this menace only when Indian civil society stood up and brought the 'whole' India to a standstill for more than a month in 2012/13! And the whole of India (including men) stood with the protesters irrespective of their differences. In fact, it is hard to find a more vocal and self-critical media/society than India!

But then, the whole movement was hijacked by opportunists with vested interests (Oscar hopefuls/Udwin's/Streep's). The words of a 'convicted/sentenced' psychopath, who is only waiting for his turn to the gallows, was portrayed as if they represent words of all Indian men. Although Ms.Udwin tried to weasel her way out by saying that her documentary was to portray problems of women across the world (and not just Indian women), the title of her documentary betrayed her real intention - "India's Daughter"!

What about "Sweden's daughters"? What about "UK's daughters"? What about those in South Africa or even in USA itself?

Its wrong to blame to world. I think Barkha is the reason why Americans said that to her, look at what she does on NDTV. She exaggerates anything that has happened in India. Take examples of Christians are not safe anymore, she made sweeping generalization based on some petty crimes without any data to back it up. Then she did 3,4 shows on those. When a person sitting in US see's Barkha doing the show and get that image, why is she unhappy about it?

99% of people here probably don't know who she is or what she supposedly said.
