Indian Frigate Sails for Sea Trials in Russia

A Talwar class frigate being built for the Indian Navy at the Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad departed on Thursday for sea trials, the shipyard said.

The Tarkash is the second in a series of three frigates built under a $1.6-billion contract with India. The first frigate, the Teg, was delivered to India in April 2012, while the third, the Trikand, is still under construction.

“The warship sailed from Kaliningrad to Baltiysk on Thursday,” Yantar spokesman Sergei Mikhailov said. “The first stage of sea trials is scheduled to start at the end of May.”

The spokesman said the frigate must be ready for delivery to the Indian Navy in October.

The new frigates are each armed with eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

They are also equipped with a 100-mm gun, a Shtil surface-to-air missile system, two Kashtan air-defense gun/missile systems, two twin 533-mm torpedo launchers, and an antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopter.

Russia has previously built three Talwar class frigates for India: the INS Talwar (Sword), INS Trishul (Trident), and INS Tabar (Ax).

I really don't know why we are buying them from the Russians. We should make them on Indian soil. We have the expertise, the equipment and the knowledge to make any ship ourselves. What we do lack though is the efficiency. We need to give the Indian shipyard industry some more practice to improve on that weakness and next thing you know, we'll be building ships for the world.

A shivalik class frigate also expected to join this year. And a kolkata class destroyer.

your enthusiasm is appreciated, but GRSE, MDL and CSL order books are full for next 3 and half years. So unless you want to build your ships in china, Russia is our best bet.

just to clear a bit of confusion about talwar class frigates, there will be a total of 6 talwar class frigates, Four of them talwar, trishul, teg and tabar are delivered, the fith is tarkash and the last one will be trikand.

not ranting but why the hell are the private operators yard totally out of order ? Pipavav and LnT have made serious additions to ship building capacity of late..

Hope Naval Planners are also thinking of Giving Orders to L & T. Need stornger Navy to be more assertive.

They've already helped in constructing the Arihant. Recently, Larsen & Toubro linked up with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems to promote the MDH-200 for the Navy's LPH requirements.

L&T need to invest in R&D a little more, expand their operations. Maybe aim for overseas military sales in the interceptor craft or smaller cruisers sector, instead of waiting around for the Navy to give them orders. That way, they've got some decent experience with military craft already when the orders from the IN do start flowing in.

We have to look at what we need and how fast we can get it done in India.
