External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankarwill travel to Dakha on Thursday to invite Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit India.

"Yes, the EAM will pay a one-day visit to Dhaka on Thursday," Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla told reporters in Delhi on Monday.

"He will carry a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to invite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit India," Shringla was quoted as saying by Dhaka Tribune.

Shringla made these remarks in response to queries from journalists at an event at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.

Foreign Secretary and Bangladesh High Commissioner Muhammad Imran on Monday attended the award-giving ceremony for felicitating winners of a competition conducted on the occasion of India-Bangladesh Friendship Day.

During the event, Shringla shared views on strengthening the bilateral partnership.

Both representatives felicitated the winners of the Maitri Diwas logo and backdrop competition conducted on the occasion of India-BangladeshMaitri Diwas.

"FS @harshvshringla and Bangladesh High Commissioner Muhammad Imran felicitated the winners of the India-Bangladesh #MaitreeDiwas logo and backdrop competition. Also shared views on further strengthening bilateral ties, including youth connect, innovation and emerging areas," said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is coming to Dhaka on a one-day visit to Bangladesh on Thursday, may carry good news and give a surprise, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said today.

"Maybe he (Jaishankar) will bring good news. We don't know, however, exactly what that is… he will give a special message. Indian media said he will invite our prime minister," he told reporters at the foreign ministry.

Jaishankar will travel to Dhaka and will carry the formal invitation letter of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reported Indian media quoting Indian Foreign Secretary Harsha Vardhan Shringla on Monday.

India's newly-appointed foreign secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra will also join Jaishankar in the visit.

"This is good news. Relations between India and Bangladesh are very sweet. I am very happy that the Indian foreign minister is coming. I welcome him," Momen said.

Jaishankar will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and then hold a meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Abdul Momen.

The prime minister will decide if and when she will visit India, he said adding, "We never say no [to an invitation]."

They will discuss and finalise the dates of Prime Minister Hasina's visit to India and the meetings of Joint Consultative Commission and Joint River Commission. These meetings will be held after secretary-level meetings, he added.

"We will discuss our outstanding issues," he said when asked what will be discussed during the meeting between him and Jaishankar.

Other issues that may be discussed entail the long-pending Teesta water agreement, border killing, trade and commerce. India imposes anti-dumping duty on Bangladesh's jute, an issue that Dhaka will raise, he said.

"It is good news that Bangladesh's trade with India increased last year. It was over $1 billion and is likely to go up in the days ahead," Momen said.

"We want to increase border haats with India to facilitate more trade," he added.

He said he will propose that the Swadhinata Sarak from Mujibnagar to Nadia is made operational.

river management should never be in substitute with water sharing treaty. We need both for water supply and controlling river erosion, and not just in teesta but all major rivers.

India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has reached Dhaka on a day-long official visit.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen welcomed him at the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Base Bangabandhu in Kurmitola of the capital after he arrived in a special aircraft on Wednesday 2.15pm.

During his visit, the Indian minister is reported to be handing over an invitation letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina to visit India.

He will return to New Delhi on the same day evening.

Diplomatic sources in New Delhi said during the visit Jaishankar will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and hold a bilateral meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen. He will also join a dinner to be hosted by Abdul Momen.

When contacted another source familiar with the development said the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India at the invitation of Modi may happen in the first week of July this year.

The visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is considered a crucial one at a time when many developments have been happening in the regional and international arena during the last couple of months. Many pending issues are likely to be discussed during the visit, India's Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last visited New Delhi from 3 to 6 October to attend the Indian Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF). During the visit, the Bangladesh Premier held bilateral talks with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

Besides, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Bangladesh from 26-27 March at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to join the celebration of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th years of establishment of Bangladesh-India diplomatic relations.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind paid a state visit to Bangladesh from 15-17 December 2021 at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart President Abdul Hamid to attend the 50th victory day celebrations of Bangladesh.

India considered the high-level visits and the present India-Bangladesh ties as a "Sonali Adhwai" or Golden Chapter of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon as the two countries eye Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi in July.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen received his Indian counterpart at BAF Base Bangabandhu at around 2:15pm upon his arrival by a special flight of Indian Air Force.

The Indian External Affairs Minister is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gonobhaban at 4:00pm.

He will hold discussions with Foreign Minister Momen at the Foreign Service Academy at 5pm on Thursday, reports UNB.

Momen will also host an Iftar-cum-dinner in honor of his Indian counterpart. Jaishankar's visit is seen in the context of frequent bilateral high-level visits and exchanges between the two countries, said the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday.

Both sides commemorate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties.

The last visit by Jaishankar to Bangladesh was in March 2021. He is scheduled to leave for Paro, Bhutan by Indian Air Force special flight at 8:30am on Friday after wrapping up his Bangladesh visit.

Momen on Tuesday said his Indian counterpart Jaishankar might bring good news. "May be he’ll bring good news and we’re yet to know what that news is exactly."

He said the relationship between Bangladesh and India is very sweet and they are very happy that Jaishankar is coming to Bangladesh. “We always welcome him. He’ll give us surprise.”

Jaishankar will be coming with the formal invitation for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an impending visit to Delhi - likely to be held in the first week of July, a diplomatic source told UNB on Sunday.

At the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Modi paid a State Visit to Bangladesh from 26 to 27 March 2021 to join the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Independence of Bangladesh, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.

At the invitation of President Abdul Hamid, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind paid a State visit to Bangladesh from December 15 to 17 last year to attend the 50th Victory Day celebrations here as the guest of honour.

It was the Indian President’s maiden visit to Bangladesh and also his first visit overseas since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The visits symbolised the partnership of half-a-century between India and Bangladesh that has strengthened, matured and evolved as a model for bilateral relations for the entire region.

In an effort to give further impetus to Dhaka-Delhi relations, the two neighboring countries are now planning to have enhanced engagement including preparation for Hasina’s visit to India at a convenient time this year, officials said.

Minister-Level Talks
Before the prime minister’s visit, the next round of Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting will be held in New Delhi, most likely next month.

The JCC will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister Momen and his Indian counterpart Jaishankar and a date is likely to be finalized during the visit of the Indian external affairs minister.

Momen said there are some meetings that need to be held before the JCC. Asked about the issues to be discussed in the next JCC, he said Bangladesh will raise all the outstanding issues in the meeting. Asked about Teesta River water sharing and border killing issues, he said Bangladesh always raise these issues and will reiterate those.

The sixth meeting of the JCC was held on September 29, 2020. Although Dhaka was scheduled to host the meeting, due to the COVID-19 situation the meeting was held on virtual platform.
