I don't know the mechanics -- pirated, or legal, CDs sounds plausible -- but many Indians are fans of old time Pakistani TV dramas like Bakra Qistoon Pey Hei, Sona Chandhi and, to a lesser extent, Andhera Ujala

Areas close to the IB / LC got to see Pk TV. The popular plays I recall were "Dehleez" and another where there was a pretty lady Doc - don't recall the name.

TV signals spilled over. Hence we could see them. Those days Doordarshan was in primitive stages.
