India has imported materiel worth INR1.034 trillion (USD17.25billion) over the past five years, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told parliament on 25 November.

Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials estimate that these imports total about 65% of the country's overall military requirements.

In August Parrikar's predecessor, Arun Jaitley, told parliament that the United States had emerged as India's largest materiel supplier over the past three years, supplying equipment worth INR326.15 billion. The next highest was Russia, with sales of INR253.36 billion; then France, with sales of INR120.47 billion; and Israel, with sales of INR33.89 billion.

Conversely, Parrikar told parliament that India's defence exports between 2011 and September 2014 totalled INR24.90 billion, despite repeated efforts by successive administrations to boost sales overseas.

I would call this a shame. Something that could have been invested in the country is being sent out. Indian companies that are more than capable to build those systems are now lying idle.

What are the numbers compared to China? Have they already surpassed them over the previous 5 year period?

India has been the world's largest purchaser od weapons for many years now.

Some imports will always need to be made but I understand what you are saying. Have faith in a decade or so the situation will be VERY different.
