Indian couple convicted in Norway

Oslo: An Indian software professional and his wife were today held guilty of "serious child abuse" and sentenced to jail terms for 18 months and 15 months respectively.

Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni and his wife Anupama, who were arrested by the police last month, were convicted for gross or repeated maltreatment of their child/children by threats, violence or other wrong. They have a couple of days to go in for appeal.

"Oslo District Court has found an Indian couple guilty on several counts of child abuse. In the view of the Court, the couple deliberately burned their son’s leg with a hot spoon or similar object with the result that the child had burn marks measuring approximately 3 x 5 centimetres," an official statement said.

The Court said it has been proven that on one occasion the parents had even threatened to brand their son's tongue with a hot spoon.

"The Court also found that it had been proven that the parents had on several occasions hit the child with a belt or similar object and that they had on one occasion threatened to burn their son on his tongue with a hot spoon. The proven abuse took place over a period of six to seven months and therefore falls under section 219, first paragraph, of the Penal Code on repeated maltreatment.

The jail terms of 18 months for the father and 15 months for the mother were proposed by the prosecution.

Good. About time some of these chaps become civilised. Indian TV news channels seriously need to introspect on the rubbish that they out out. Too many excuses made. too much blame put elsewhere, simply tired of seeing garbage being passed off as a news discussion.

I'll have to partly disagree.
You have to consider the parents intentions in their actions. If their intentions were malicious then sure punish them. But if it was for disciplining the child, then a smaller punishment (fine/classes) would do fine. The course of action in this particular case is detrimental for the family.
Also just because a few psychologists have suggested that all corporal punishment is bad does not mean that I have to take what they say.
Ultimately its their country and their law, but I feel the punishment in this case is too much. A reprimand should have sufficed.

and Child abuse A.K.A. Disciplining is common in middle eastern , south asian and east asian communities . Almost all guys get Disciplined by their parents . I see not much wrong in it until they are actually Treating the kid very very bad .

Bringing your neighbours into your own issues for sake of brushing the dirt under the carpet, is something which makes you Indians look one of the weakest around here.

disciplining the child is indeed NOT objectionable but burning, brusing badly, breaking bones is obectionable which i believe everyone of us will oppose in our countries too.

I disagree. They could legally be in trouble even in India even though there is very little chance that such action would be taken here. However in Norway, there is no getting away. Burning a child as a manner of instilling discipline is unacceptable. This will serve as a deterrent hopefully.

Completely agreed . Thats why i said its a Good News . A line needs to be drawn . You can't Simply kill your kids in the name of Disciplining .

I don't agree with the burning either. However they could have been given a different punishment. Now with this 18 and 15 month jail, the entire family loses. If it was a repeat offender sure put them in.
