Indian congressman calls for 'plebiscite' in Indian Kashmir

Indian Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday that there should be a plebiscite in Kashmir, before refuting his statement and clarifying he actually meant dialogue and not referendum to be carried out in the valley.

In worst violence in the held territory in decades, scores of protesters were shot dead after the killing of a popular rebel leader Burhan Wani at the hands of Indian forces.

“In Kashmir today, there is a need for rai shumari [plebiscite], Scindia said while addressing the Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament).”

The congressman, however, denied his statement hours later, saying, “I have never said there should be plebiscite. I have said there should be dialogue.”

Pointing out that the situation in the valley had deteriorated, Scindia said, “PDP-BJP [Peoples Democratic Party- Bharatiya Janata Party] government has shed all the principles. Administration is divided and the government, which should support people, is using weapons against them.”

“The wounds there can be healed only through humanity,” Scindia stressed.

Highlighting that Kashmir as “an important part of the heart of every Indian”, the congressman said, “but today that crown is being insulted. This I feel is irresponsible.”

The congressman went on to add that the PDP-BJP government had “insulted” the “crown” of India.

“There is a need to create an environment of peace and tranquility; growth and development,” Scindia said.

True because even if the plebiscite were to be held, the party at loss would accuse that Plebiscite was not held in fair manner

Exactly. I hope Kashmir, KPK, Baluchistan, Punjab, Sindh all get an opportunity to participant in referendums to decide their future.

It's really sad when people do not have these basic rights.

India hs always been ready to do even plebiscite if Pakistan fulfilled the pre-condition required by the UN. Pakistan has not and will never do that because 1) the reason for military existence will be gone 2) Azad Kashmir Kashmir will also chose to rejoin India and 3) they will have to ask China to get out of the land they gave them for protection.

If a fair referedum is held in all Kashmirs, the likely outcome would be either join Pakistan or become an independent state. Neither of these options would be palatable to Bharat even an independent state.

Its too bad Pakistan did not withdraw its forces under the UN resolution in 48 to allow the plebiscite to be run.

Pakistan did not trust India and probably feared the result as well to some degree....so we have status quo.

If you want any referendum process for Kashmir you will have to discuss bilaterally under Simla Agreement....but you keep wanting to drag in others....so tell us when you want to finally follow up on something you physically signed for.

If a fair referedum is held in all Kashmirs, the likely outcome would be either join Pakistan or become an independent state. Neither of these options would be palatable to Bharat even an independent state.

Then why not withdraw in 48 and let it be completed?

ts too bad Pakistan did not withdraw its forces under the UN resolution in 48 to allow the plebiscite to be run.

Pakistan barely have any force in Kashmir, just to guard LOC. There are no checkpost and ID checks in Azad Kashmir. No soldiers on the roads. Even police presence is rare to main business centers. Now compare this with half a million Indian occupied force wearing bullet proof vest to fight protesters.

That's why Pakistan started with Kashmir. After all it's part of Pakistan.
