India’s new citizenship law is “fundamentally discriminatory in nature,” the United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill does not extend the same protection to Muslim migrants as to other religious minorities, and this undermines India’s commitment to equality before the law, enshrined in the constitution, UN human rights spokesman Jeremy Laurence said in Geneva.

“We understand the new law will be reviewed by the Supreme Court of India and hope it will consider carefully the compatibility of the law with India’s international human rights obligations,” Reuters quoted Laurence as saying.

PM Narendra Modi’s government has said the bill was meant to protect besieged minorities.

India’s new citizenship law is “fundamentally discriminatory in nature,” the United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday.

UN human rights should do well to view this bill in the historical context of Indian subcontinent and its partition. Otherwise, they'd look moronic and laughing stock when GOI ignores them completely.

India does too under refugee law. This is an addition to it. These minorities of three theocratic countries discriminate minorities in their constitution. Hence they are provided fast track to citizenship. If a Muslim feel persecuted in muslim country(however hippocratic that is), they could still apply for refugee status. Indian refugee law will apply and the case would be looked at on merit.

Bangladeshis are just worried that all those people who left the country for India illegally, would come back and cramp them still. That's all.

If you are taking a principled position, then why not do the opposite in your countries, extend similar support to Indian muslims claiming religious persecution.

I'm not talking about Indian media. Who cares about Indian media, there are hundreds of Channels in India.
But, what is your PM and science minister doing? Are they supposed to be PM of Pakistan or opposition leaders of India? Why they get uncomfortable when say Ayodhya verdict, NRC, CAB, Indian satellite launches etc... etc...?
