Indian Navy inducts Russian maritime patrol aircraft, EVS

New Delhi, Oct 01: The Indian Navy on Monday added a Russian made maritime reconnaissance aircraft TU-142 and an indigenously developed Environmental Survey Vehicle (ESV).

The TU-142 ‘Bear’ aircraft, which is larger than the Airbus in size and weight, made its maiden landing at a naval base in Visakhapatnam, the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command.

The aircraft is the naval version of Tupolev TU-95 that played a crucial role for Russians during the Cold War, and India has currently eight such aircraft which are being used for maritime patrol.

In addition to it, Indian Navy has three Russian made Ilyushin Il-38 aircraft for maritime patrol and twenty Dornier Do 228 aircraft that are used as transport utilities.

"The aircraft (TU-142) is very versatile and its capabilities immense. And with the new runway and this event we have further enhanced the capabilities of our maritime surveillance and our Anti Submarine Warfare capabilities in the region," said Commander L. S. S. Babu, Chief Staff Officer (Operation) at the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, who received the aircraft.

The new aircraft would also provide the Indian Navy with operational flexibility and a diversionary maritime airfield on the country’s eastern coast.

The TU-142 was first inducted into the Navy at Goa on March 30, 1988.

Meanwhile, an Environmental Survey Vehicle (ESV), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was formally handed over to the Indian Navy in New Delhi today.

ESV is a radiological laboratory on wheels, capable of estimating radioactivity in field conditions. It is also capable to detect any intentional or unintentional release of radioactivity in a marine environment and would aid the defence forces in nuclear warfare.

DRDO To Develop Long Range, Subsonic Cruise Missile

Indian defence scientists have taken up a new cruise missile development programme. The missile named Nirbhay (The Fearless) is in the same class as the US's Tomahawk and will have a range that is 300km longer than Pakistan's Babur.

Nirbhay is India's seventh missile development project after the Agni series, the Prithvi series, Brahmos (in a joint venture with Russia), Akash, Trishul and Nag. The last three were part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme founded by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Nirbhay is being developed alongside Astra, an air-to-air missile designed to hit targets beyond visual range.

A cruise missile can be guided to a target. A ballistic missile is fired at a pre-determined target. Nirbhay will carry onboard a terrain-identification system that will map its course and relay the information to its guidance and propulsion systems. Every modern military needs to have missile options. The requirement for Nirbhay was projected by all three armed forces to fill a gap in our missile programme, Avinash Chander, the director of the Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, who is in charge of the project, told The Telegraph in Delhi today.

Nirbhay will be a terrain-hugging missile capable of avoiding detection by ground-based radar. It would have a range of 1,000km. We have Brahmos, which is a supersonic cruise missile and the need was felt for a subsonic cruise missile that will be capable of being launched from multiple platforms in land, air and sea, Chander said.

In the schedule drawn up for Nirbhay, a technology demonstrator is slotted for early 2009. Chander said the design for the system is complete and hardware preparations are on. He said Nirbhay would weigh around 1,000kg and travel at 0.7 mach (nearly 840kmph) and would be capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads. The Pakistani subsonic cruise missile Babur (also called Hatf VII) has ranges of 500 to 700km. The USA's Tomahawk has many versions, the latest of which has ranges in excess of 1,500km.

National Army finalises its space warfare vision

New Delhi (PTI): Seeking to catch up with China and other advanced nations in space warfare, Indian Armed Forces have finalized plans for use of space for military applications.

Taking a leaf from the Indian Air Force, the Army has finalised its Space Vision 2020 which will be vetted at tomorrow's top commanders conference here.

Like the IAF, the Army has now also established a "space cell" at the headquarters here apparently in anticipation of a government nod for setting up of Tri-service Aerospace command.

"The commanders' conclave will be aimed at ratifying the army space philosphy". an army spokesman said.

With the Chinese recently demonstrating its capability to destroy a satellite, India's strategic planners asked the armed forces to gear up for use of outer space for military applications.

Salam and hi,

First of all, i would like to comment that if the India's prepations are not only for Pakistan specific, then i dont think so India is still capable to compete china or Russia.

Yes Propogenda is there that prepations are not for Pakistan, then i think its almost Pakistan specific.

If India is not capable to compete with China, then Pakistan is not capable to compete with India. Get the hint...

Yeah we can see that. I wasnt expecting such a typical indian answer. My point was to actually highligh another issue regarding arms race in south asia. As pakistan doesnt have a satellite that india intends to destroy so developing a weapon to destroy a satellite means to engage china and this can inturn lead to a direct arms race between china and india which at the moment india is in no position to compete in with china same as pakistan is not in a position to compete with india.

Minimum credible detterence. And India does not plan to develop anti sat weapons.

Indian PM heads to Russia to sign defence, energy deals
Updated at 2010 PST
NEW DELHI: India's premier is expected to sign deals with Russia concerning trade, nuclear energy and defence during his trip to Moscow next week, officials said Thursday.

During his two-day visit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, officials from the premier's office said. Singh heads to Moscow on Sunday.

The leaders were likely to ink deals to build four more Russian nuclear reactors in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and to jointly produce a fifth-generation fighter jet.

Under an existing deal, Russia has agreed to install two reactors in Tamil Nadu with a capacity to produce 1,000 megawatts of atomic energy a day.

Earlier Thursday, Indian defence minister Arackaparambil Kurian Antony, who is attending a high-level meeting in Moscow, confirmed the jet deal. He said the jet project, along with other initiatives, demonstrated "the strategic nature of Russo-Indian cooperation."

Russia accounts for 70 percent of Indian military hardware, but late deliveries, especially of tanks, and commercial disagreements have forced New Delhi to turn to Western arms firms.
Current two-way annual trade between the two countries is about 112 billion dollars.

Are you sure that pakistan does not have a satellite? This is unbeliveable...in the 20th century, a country does not have satellite!!!...this sounds far from true.
