New DELHI, India (CNN) -- Indian border guards fired four rockets into Pakistan on Saturday in what they said was retaliation to a similar fire from the other side. Pakistan denied that claim.

Two unexploded rockets were traced after midnight near an Indian outpost along the border dividing the Punjab region between the two countries, said K. Srinivasan, a deputy inspector-general of India's Border Security Force.

"We have standing instructions to retaliate and retaliate heavily," he said, adding that Indian borders guards also fired about 50 gunshots. The firing has stopped as of now, he said.

But a spokesman for the Pakistan Rangers said India's allegations were false.

Nadeem Raza said that an explosion was heard at about 11:30 p.m., after which Indians fired mortars into Pakistani territory.

Saturday's skirmish came a day after a long gunfight ended between Indian security forces and militants in Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu and Kashmir state.

The border between India and Pakistan is disputed in the Kashmir region, where India accuses Pakistan of fueling an insurgency. The two nations have fought three wars over the territory since their independence in 1947 and routinely exchanged fire along the border, known as the Line of Control, until a 2003 ceasefire agreement.

But tensions between the two South Asian rivals, both nuclear powers, escalated after the deadly siege on Mumbai in November, 2008. More than 160 people were killed in the Mumbai assault, which derailed the peace process.

The Indian government hinted Friday that Pakistan was behind this week's attack in Srinagar.

"The two militants who were killed were in communication with their handlers outside India," said a statement issued by Home Minister P. Chidambaram. "The incident highlights the fact that the country, especially Jammu and Kashmir, remains vulnerable to militant attacks sponsored by forces from across the border."

Chidambaram's comment echoed India's allegations that the terrorists who laid siege to Mumbai were in touch with their leaders in Pakistan by phone.

So, what do you want to do? Fight a war? Just say it and lets get on with the job without wasting any time. I say, let's get over and done with this BS. Aren't we just tired of this sissy BS. One rocket fired and the other retaliates. What's this sissy nonsense.

You're giving the 'sissy nonsense' now. Read the article. It said they fired back because Pakistan fired first. (of course Pakistan would deny it. like they with Mumbai attacks :yahoo:)

Are they TRYING to start a war?

Who's starting war?
discussions like this are the one creating this hysteria.

Are they TRYING to start a war?

If by 'they' you mean the Pakistani army then its best to ask them that question.

Not too long ago, the PA was in the habit of providing cover for so called 'freedom fighters' by pinning Indian soldiers down with artillery fire, can't say if that was the case this time around but given our history I don't see any other plausible explanation. India didn't attack Pakistan after 26/11 so its quite clear that the GoI has better things to do than torpedo a sinking ship.

The BSF was simply retaliating.

"We have standing instructions to retaliate and retaliate heavily," he said, adding that Indian borders guards also fired about 50 gunshots. The firing has stopped as of now, he said.

Awesome.:D

Hopefully they'll think twice next time.

Indian, Pakistani troops exchange fire at border area: Indian official - People's Daily Online Jan 09 2010

Indian paramilitary officials claimed on Saturday that Pakistani troops fired rockets at the Indo-Pak border town of Wagah in northern Indian state of Punjab a little past midnight Friday.

"Four rockets were fired from across the border at 12.40 a.m. today. Two rockets landed near the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) post at Wagah, while the other two landed in a field. The BSF returned the fire with small arms and mortars. No casualty has been reported," Punjab frontier Inspector General of Police (IGP) Himmat Singh told the media.

A flag meeting was held with the Pakistan Rangers right after the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, India has claimed that the country is still vulnerable to terrorist attacks sponsored by "forces from across the border", after militants launched an attack upon a police station earlier this week in India-controlled Kashmir, in which four people, including a policeman and two militants, were killed in a 22-hour gunfighting.

"The incident highlights the fact that the country, especially Jammu and Kashmir, remains vulnerable to militant attacks sponsored by forces from across the border," Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram said on Friday. :china:

LoL

I thought no one trusted Indian Media. For being unduly Bias

What happen now.

Well I'm happy Indian Media is reporting on stuff like these and Other Indian problems keeps GoI under pressure.

Yes for a change Indian media has reported something less bias, but Indian media or some other media the statements are enough to prove the point.

I'm happy not only for the sake of bringing the GOI under pressure through such reporting but also educating the masses and providing them a more neutral point of view for a change.

If India had fired some rockets and a couple were found "unexploded"..The next day headlines would be journalists in India becoming experts and talk about "Failed" Indian military equipment :D

So Pakistani equipment do fail

.
Govt. should ask our forces to heavily retaliates all these attacks. Also, RAW should be allowed to carryout special missions so that Pakistani army/ISI thinks twice before doing any mischief and escalating tensions as they have done in Kargil and 26/11 mumbai.

Also they want to revive the terrorism in Punjab.

We should bleed their terror mechanism twice as much and severely punish them it will be a deterrent in the future.
