Any unnecessary killing should be avoided yes.
However, from a distance, the border force needs to take a split second decision. Whether to fire and stop the people from crossing over or take no action and let them go.
From a distance, how will they know that those crossing border illegally are mere smugglers or terrorists or drug dealers. Its not as if they are voluntarily submitting themselves to be checked.

In fact, oft times these smugglers move in big groups and tend to attack small border patrols who have to then fire back in self defence.

If that is true, then why are you not able to send back Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan which has caused you numerous troubles over the decades.

You tried the military / insurgent tactic in 1999 when Afghanistan was under Taliban rule. You failed then and you will fail again. This time with even more severe consequences, as the economic and diplomatic gap between India and Pak has widened even more in these 2 decades.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) killed two Bangladeshi youths and took away their bodies in a fresh firing incident, despite a repeated commitment from the Indian side not to use lethal weapons along border areas.
Yes, the incident happened on Sunday morning while the youths were returning from the Indian side, having cows with them. They were shot dead, and the Border Security Force of India did not hand over the bodies,” Omor Faruque, the officer in charge of Patgram Police Station, told Anadolu Agency.

The BSF fired at the two Bangladeshis along the Burimari frontier in Patgram subdistrict of Bangladesh’s northern border district of Lalmonirhat.

“The youths were coming from the Indian side [of the border] and were not carrying legal entry documents,” Faruque added.

The BGB sent a letter to the BSF in protest against the killings and demanded that the bodies be handed over. It has yet to receive a formal response from the BSF, however.

The killings of Bangladeshis by the Indian border force have continued despite assurances from the Indian side of not using lethal weapons.

India shares its largest border area with Bangladesh. The two countries share a 4,096-kilometer (2,545-mile) international border, the fifth-longest land border in the world.

The Indian government has issued public orders to exercise restraint and end unlawful killings and made assurances to Bangladesh, including during talks in December 2020, according to Human Rights Watch.
Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told parliament in July last year that the BSF had killed a total of 294 Bangladeshi nationals in the last 10 years.

However, the Bangladeshi human rights organisation Odhikar alleged that the border forces have killed at least 334 Bangladeshis since 2011 and committed other instances of severe abuse, including 51 killings in 2020.

Why Bangladesh can't fence its border with?
This death number is huge and must be stopped.

According to BSF, the patrolling team saw at least 12-15 cattle smugglers from the Indian side and 10-12 smugglers from Bangladesh approaching the border. As they tried to intercept them, the suspected smugglers from both the sides started pelting stones at the soldiers. Some smugglers from Indian side surrounded a BSF jawan and attacked him with a sharp weapon. The jawan, who had a narrow escape, fired two rounds from his non-lethal pump action gun in self-defence that hit one Bangladeshi smuggler. although investigation is still going on.

In the short term to medium term yes, but with the rise of sea levels due to climate change that could easily change in the next few decades.

Unless BD can somehow reinforce so many inland rivers with levies, barriers, concrete? maybe find some kind of new radical solution?

BD being such a small nation with a huge population would want to expand want West Bengal and a large part of north east to merge with it.
