A mob of 70-80 men groped and molested two young women for some 15 minutes on a busy main street in Mumbai’s glamour district Juhu early on New Year’s Day.

An identical incident had shamed India’s safest city exactly a year ago — a girl was molested by New Year’s eve revellers at the Gateway of India. That incident was captured on film by a popular Mumbai tabloid; Tuesday morning’s horror was shot by two Hindustan Times lensmen who happened to be on the spot.

The women — one in a black dress, the other in a jeans and top — emerged from the JW Marriott with two male friends around 1.45 am, and began walking towards Juhu beach close by.

A mob of about 40 got after them and began teasing the women. One of the women swore loudly at the hooligans.

But the mob, now 70-80 strong, wouldn’t let go. They trapped the women near a vehicle and a tree, and pounced on them. A man in a white shirt tore off the black dress. Another, in a blue shirt, led the assault. As the women fell on the ground, dozens of men jumped on them.

At which point, HT’s Satish Bate spotted a police van and shouted.

Senior Inspector Amarjeet Singh rushed in swinging his cane and chased away the mob. He took the victims to the Juhu police station. However, no case was registered, Juhu police station in-charge Shivaji Tadlapurkar said.

i know what you mean, but you have to realize that it was a mob of 70 people? that's not "gang-rape", it's more like "super gang-rape" where the whole town is involved. none of those men did anything to prevent it, did not they not realize that they're bringing shame to themselves and their people? i don't think this stuff used to happen in india before, india was actually a nice tourist attraction.

Legaly nothing is classified as rape untill penetration takes palce but psychologicaly molesting without consent may have similar effects.

Imagine the psychological condition of a woman in foreign country being molested by the security personals! she only stands a chance of miracle other wise 99% cases may go unreported.

Do you know Sir Ray aka Salim that Indian media is as clever in puting things that are shamful, undercover by using mild words for these.

Just pick up many news about assults on women in India and you will find Indian media using word "Molesting" for rape as well as kissing or any other sexual assult on women.

Anyway the aim was not telling that oh look it was going on India only as we all know that raping women and other sexual atrocities against women are going in all parts of the world incuding my country.

The only thing which is alarming is that In India foreign women trourists are being attacked frequently and i failed to underdstand the reason behind it.

Stealth for me women from all arround the world are respectable. without any discrimination against any nationality.

As far sexual assult on foreign women in India, honestly Stealth go and check the news during last some time the practice is becoming chronic.

And i am still looking forward for reply from any of you from India on this board as what is the reason behind this.

Honestly stealth by looking at the "hostality" as a result of many operations and killing of innocent people in some cases in Pakistan and also in Afghanistan, towards foreigners one might expecyt such incidents in these countries.

India has it's share of rowdies and goons and frustrated people. There are so many migrants living away from their families in cities and a certain % of population in any country would be outlaws.

So while it is shameful to have even one such incident, it should be still not so surprising. And a perspective needs to be kept that it is still very isolated, happning to one or two among millions of tourists. The media reports may make perceptions different from reality.
