Indian Army Wants to Urgently Induct New Generation Russian Tanks

India has inked a contract for 64 next gen T 90 tanks. The army wants the order to be split between direct imports and domestic production to induct all tanks as quickly as possible

New Delhi (Sputnik) — The Indian Army is raring to bolster its firepower due to the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. On Monday, the Pakistan Foreign Office called in the Indian envoy to protests against the killing of seven soldiers on the border.


According to the Defense Ministry sources, the Army wants to induct the latest version of T-90 tanks as early as possible. The Ministry had approved the purchase of 64 T-90MS tanks.

T-90 is the third generation Russian tank known for its fire power. The export version of the new T-90MS tanks includes fragmentation projectile with remote detonation to cause further havoc in adversary’s ranks.

But the army is not satisfied with the pace of domestic production and wants some of the tanks to be directly imported from Russia. The T-90MS is the latest version of the famous Russian T–series of tanks. The India-Russia T-90MS tank will strengthen maneuverability along the border and thereby send a strong warning to Pakistan.


“T-90MS will replace the older T-72 tanks. It addresses some of the shortcomings of T-90, is easily transportable and less weighty. The domestically made Arjun tanks were originally suited for the terrain in the border states of Punjab and Rajasthan. But increasing population centers and an enhanced network of canals have limited its areas of deployment and operations. This is where T-90MS will be more useful because they are lighter and more maneuverable. The low ground pressure of T-90 MS tanks is an advantage in the soft sands of Rajasthan and mud of Punjab.


“Therefore, T-90MS tanks are well suited to Indian army. The latest features also enhance the fire power. So, T-90MS tanks are urgent needed by the Indian Army in the present situation,” Major General (Rtd) G D Bakshi told Sputnik.

IA & IAF have never been encouraging indigenous products, be it now or way back. From my experience as an intern at HAL and working for a couple of contract projects for DRDO & NSTL under a professor during my undergrad, I could say govt organizations do develop world class products, except the fact that most employees in these orgs are recruited through reservation and recommendations but they are definitely better than employees at HAL & OFBs. Arjun seems to be an awesome tank and has also proven its mettle when pitted against the T-90 and proved to be superior except for the weight. If only DRDO works effectively to reduce the weight by using more composites, it would definitely be one helluva tank and could be inducted in large numbers. But the problem with IA & IAF's top brass is, they've been accustomed to being bribed and accepting commissions and kickbacks and hence have an affinity towards foreign maal.

The current NDA govt should make sure IA & IAF follow IN when it comes to inducting indigenous products. Even the artillery guns, IFVs, howitzers, assault rifles that have been indigenously developed by public and private firms like Tata Kestrel, Bharat 52, MCIWS etc should be inducted. Instead of going with the expensive M777, the task can be given to private firms like Tata, Reliance, Kalyani Group etc as they already have the experience building artillery guns and could use that technical expertise to build other equipment that the armed forces are looking abroad. While DRDO handles R&D, full scale production should be given to private firms for better organizational productivity, higher quality products and increased production rate. Should follow suit of Israel, where the Merkava-Mk2 was an inferior tank but they stuck to it and were able to produce the Merkava Mk4 which is world class and also China in this regard as we have systems from different countries, DRDO should study them and possibly reverse engineer for the technical expertise and should integrate the best of all the systems available while developing indigenous tech as reinventing the wheel doesn't always work. For those who think acquiring more T90s is a dent in Make in India, these T90s are Made in India.

It's Armata dude. While the manufacturer is ready to export the Armata to foreign countries, the Russian govt didn't take any stand on its export as of now. Moreover, most of the subsystems, EW suite and other systems in the Armata haven't been declassified yet, but the word is that they are gonna declassify once it is inducted in sufficient numbers in the Russian armed forces. India is definitely interested and would surely purchase the Armata once it is cleared for export.

The degree of classification on the new Armata T-14 Main Battle Tank (MBT) will be removed after the vehicle receives permission for export, said Vyacheslav Khalitov, the deputy director of UralVagonZavod arms manufacturer.

The need to purchase for China makes sense, since its main battle tank, the Type 99, is a derivative of the old Soviet T-72 main battle tank, with a design that stretches back to the mid-1980s. The Indian army operates the Soviet-built T-90, which is itself a derivative of the T-72. Delhi also uses other tanks such as the indigenously produced Arjun Mark-1 tank. These have proven unreliable at times, however. Keep trust in defense Minister, He is the man who knows what he is doing.. He has done many visit to Bangalore, I am sure he has not came here for fun..

Since the situation is hot "After the surgical strike whihc Indian didn't do against Pak" , To be prepared for worst , He allowed T90s import.

Same he did with IAF, he ordered some 36 RAFAEL and forced IAF to induct LCA. IAF was asking for LCA MK-II ( a tactics to reject LCA). Parikar Kicked on a$$ of corrupt Chu***s and forced them to acquire LCA.

If DRDO push Arjuna MK-II, Parikar will kick some bastard a$$ and force them to induct it..
