In what is being seen as a crucial victory for the Indian Army after a long-standing spat with the Indian Air Force, the government today accorded clearance to the Army to operate its own attack helicopter units.

India currently has two attack helicopter units, both under the command and control of the Army, but flown and maintained by IAF pilots and personnel. Seems pretty clear that the government's approval today means (a) that the two Mi-25/35 flights under two helicopter units will soon be flown by Army Aviation pilots (the choppers are in IAF livery) and the IAF will raise new units to house the 22 new attack helicopters (prospectively, the Boeing AH-64D Apache Block III) and, later, the Light Combat Helicopter. (b) The Mi-25/35s will be transferred to IAF command and control, while the Army raises new units and floats fresh requirements (it already stands to receive the Dhruv-WSI), or (c) a status quo on command and control of the current units, until new platforms enter service.

Indeed good news, but the marked part bothers me, because that might be the next battlefield between IA and IAF, since these Apaches are intended to replace the Mi 35, so if IA now gets the Mi 35, they also must get the Apaches later. The decision of MoD is good, but the next steps are important, will they divert the most part of the attack and transport helicopters to IA now, which would be operationally better, or did they just went with a compromise and gave both attack helicopters to stop the current issue?

New Delhi: Defence Minister A K Anotny today directed that the Indian Army deploy extra man power in the North East as fast as possible. He asked the Army to prepare to induct more attack helicopters into the force. The Defence Minister was reviewing the modernisation of the Indian Army.

Modernisation of the Indian Army has been in sharp focus since the letter of the former chief, General V K Singh, to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was leaked to the media. General Singh's letter had pointed to severe deficiencies in equipment and systems.

Sources said that Mr Antony, reviewing the Army's modernisation programme, also asked the Army to step-up on the infrastructure development in the North East. Besides this, the Minister also reviewed the process of acquisition of artillery guns and asked the Army to reform its acquisition process.

Mr Antony also reviewed new measures taken to increase and improve ammunition storage systems in the North East. Besides this, he also asked the Army to prioritise and focus on critical areas to plug existing gaps. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Defence including the Defence Secretary Sashikant Sharma and Secretary Defence Production Shekhar Agarwal.

As per my conversation with my MOD army contact they are expecting the Apache. They wanted more but ordering 22 for lack of funds.

We have entered an era where no domain is reserved for one particular force, i mean each force is entering others domain, like Indian army has army aviation corps which will now operate attack choppers also + it has specially trained units for naval amphibious operations. Indian Air force is also tasked for anti ship operations, Indian navy has naval aviation units + special commandos called MARCOS.

In the unlikely event you actually have a contact in the MoD . What in the world would possibly compel you to post your 'information' on an online forum ?

And from all the forums out there, you had to post it in THIS forum ?

Confirms what I think, but what will IAF say about it?

I am not sure as to whata the army is asking. They were supposed to operate the LCH on their own and IAF was supposed to operate the advanced attack helos, so its old news, just transfering the Mi 35 hinds to IA wont makeany sense uness the entire fleet comes under their bucket.
