Indian Army's Western Command is conducting a major exercise in the plains of Punjab during the month of May 2012 as a part of its operational preparedness. The battle manoeuvres being undertaken aim at validating Army's fighting concepts and absorbing new technologies, an army
release stated here today adding that this exercise is part of Army's systems approach to training which aims at transforming it into a modern, lean, agile and a well equipped force, capable of accomplishing assigned tasks thus showcasing its rapid response capability.

The exercise will enter its peak phase in mid May, 2012 when the elements of the Western Command will carry out the final phase of manoeuvres.

This will encompass all the fighting arms of the Indian Army including approx 20,000 soldiers, tanks, mechanised vehicles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Attack Helicopters and front line Fighter Aircraft of the Indian Air Force, release stated.

During the exercise, units and formations will practice infusion of latest technology within the Army, thereby gearing it for "network-centric operations".

The exercise will encompass extensive use of satellite imagery, air borne surveillance and a wide array of land and air based radars to "achieve battle field transparency".

This will provide real time information of the battle front to the field commanders which will help in decision making during conflict.

Army to conduct a major military exercise in Punjab - Hindustan Times

Totally awesome.. :woot: :woot:

Pakistan is no longer the major conventional threat to India. Pakistan is is turmoil and the military is too busy fighting in the tribal areas.

The last time Pakistan tried to fight India conventionally was 1971.

The major threat of conventional war is from China now. The Army needs to conduct more excersizes and induct more equipment in the Himalayas.

Good analysis.

It is insane on part of Indian army to complain about Punjab-Pashtoon Jihadis from one end, and then from the other end, create stink of false threats right next to the Pak-army's heartland.

Thus any exercise along Pak borders these days is strategically and militarily a $tupid and asinine idea.

peace.

Bhaijaan, pakistan was never a threat to India before the nukes.

Pakistan is is turmoil and the military is too busy fighting in the tribal areas.

1. That's not our problem or concern.

2. They are only fighting pakistani taliban and as per Govt. of India/USA saving other to attack India.

pakistan never tried to fight India its just attacked to take some vital border areas and kashmir.

The major threat of conventional war is from China now.

1. A threat is a threat major or minor.

2. pakistan is a major threat till it have nukes.

3. As per govt. of India, pakistan is using threat of nuke war to launch regular terrorist attacks on India and saving terrorist training camps. And if India talk or surgical strike to target these terrorists camps then pakistan plays the card of nuke war.

The Army needs to conduct more excersizes and induct more equipment in the Himalayas.

Very true. But it doesn't means that we leave pak front open.

Its like Indian cricket team have to practice to play with Australia but we also need practice to play with England too.

Actually its a very useful tool:

1. Because of pakistan we have to maintain 24/7/365 army on stand by.

2. Now, its good to keep pakistan busy as it can not manipulate in Afghanistan with full concentration as its resources will be directed towards India.

I'm still waiting for some exercises in mountains of this amplitude...some lightning fast mountain warfare exercise involving 2 branch of armed forces (IA and IAF)..

.
perfecting Cold start???..................or perhaps a new doctrine!:azn:

People need to understand that these exercises are annual with each of India's Strike Corps participating in one such ex once every 3 years. The only thing new is the scale of exercises seems to be dramatically increasing and the utilization of new tech like satillites and the particaption of the IAF which has grown significantly.

Rajasthan :

-- Ex Yudh Abhyas
-- Ex Shorveer

Now , time for Punjab to taste some ... maybe Ambala-based 2 Corps would be involved in this ?

It's not about equipment entirely any more. It's troubling to think that our doctrine on mountain warfare has not been defined, therefore limiting any chances of improvement throughout exercises and war gaming. There is so much we can learn from other countries whose armies are tasked with mountain warfare.

No lightning fast business - resolute defence.

No, no, it's about services integration and using network-centric methods to achieve the information integration part of that.

but what about the tongas?

On their way to you for use in your mechanized formations.

.
Very good news they should regularly have joint exercise with IAF in Punjab.

And what are they expecting over there? An attack from Pakistan?

Dude, they're focusing on the wrong area again and again. The future theatre of conflict is not going to be western border but eastern. MOD needs to open its damn eyes and smell the coffee.
