Akash missile reported 30% failure rate, says CAG
The CAG did not mention name of the strategic missile but sources said the auditor was referring to the Akash missiles. “Out of 80 missiles received up to November 2014, 20 missiles were test fired during April-November 2014. Six of these missiles that is 30 per cent, failed the test,” the CAG said in the report. The auditor said as the failure rate of the sample tested was as high as 30%, action needs to be taken to establish the reliability of factory acceptance test of the remaining missiles
The Indian Time newspaper reported that an Indian military investigation committee said:
The Indian air defense system is inapplicable and unreliable.. One third of the Akash missile systems fall into this category (not usable)
The missile was designed to operate on the Indo-China border in six locations, 80 rockets were delivered, Twenty of them have been tested, of which about 6 or 30% have failed
The Indian army refuses to get additional regiments from Aaksh's systems
it called for Israel's fast-response air defense system.
