Indian Army Chief lacks strategic acumen: Gen Majid

RAWALPINDI—Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majid has said that Indian army Chief General Deepak Kapoor knows very well what his army cannot and Pakistan Armed forces can pull off militarily.
Addressing senior military officers at the Joint Staff headquarters here on Saturday CJCSC doubted veracity of Indian media report attributed to General Kapoor stating that he(Kapoor) could not be so outlandish in strategic postulations to fix India on a self destruct mechanism.
Replying to a question about Indian army Chief General Kapoor’s jingoistic pronouncement of Indian military preparations to fight China and Pakistan simultaneously, General Tariq Majid said leave alone China, General Deepak Kapoor knows Pakistan Armed Forces can pull off militarily what the Indian army cannot..
He said if the news report is correct, the uncalled for rhetoric only betrays lack of strategic acumen.
Earlier, the media had reported that the Indian Army is now revising its five-year-old doctrine to effectively meet the challenges of a possible `two-front war’ with China and Pakistan, deal with asymmetric and fourth-generation warfare and enhance strategic reach and joint operations with IAF and Navy, reports Indian newspaper The Times of India
Work on the new war doctrine — to reflect the reconfiguration of threat perceptions and security challenges — is already underway under the aegis of Shimla-based Army Training Command, headed by Lt-General A. S Lamba, said sources.
It comes in the backdrop of the 1.13-million strong Army having practised — through several wargames over the last five years — its `pro-active’ war strategy to mobilise fast and strike hard to pulverise the enemy.
This `cold start strategy’, under a NBC (nuclear-chemical-biological) overhang, emerged from the `harsh lessons’ learnt during Operation Parakram, where it took Army’s strike formations almost a month to mobilise at the `border launch pads’ after the December 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament.
This gave ample opportunity to Pakistan to shore up its defences as well as adequate time to the international community, primarily the US, to intervene. The lack of clear directives from the then NDA government only made matters worse.
“A major leap in our approach to conduct of operations (since then) has been the successful firming-up of the cold start strategy (to be able to go to war promptly),” said Army chief General Deepak Kapoor, at a closed-door seminar on Tuesday.
The plan now is to launch self-contained and highly-mobile `battle groups’, with Russian-origin T-90S tanks and upgraded T-72 M1 tanks at their core, adequately backed by air cover and artillery fire assaults, for rapid thrusts into enemy territory within 96 hours.
Gen Kapoor identified five thrust areas that will drive the new doctrine. One, even as the armed forces prepare for their primary task of conventional wars, they must also factor in the eventuality of `a two-front war’ breaking out.
In tune with this, after acquiring a greater offensive punch along the entire western front with Pakistan by the creation of a new South-Western Army Command in 2005, India is now taking steps — albeit belatedly — to strategically counter the stark military asymmetry with China in the eastern sector.

The first thing Gen Majid and others should do is understand his statement, then comment on it. It is been quit a incidences of twisting what he said and then making fun.
1) He said limited conventional war like Kargil can happen between nuclear armed India and Pakistan
It was twisted to
Gen Deepak Kapoor said, we can have limited nuclear war.
2) He said India preparing to fight Pak and China if attacked.
It was twisted to
Gen Deepak Kapoor said, he is going to attack Pak and China.

If this is how you guys read statements than I have nothing to say.

I personally think that Gen Depak's statement has created an air similar to that of Cuban missile crises ...

And the first thing you should do is understand what Gen. Majid has said. He has clearly stated that he does not believe that Gen. Kapoor would actually say something like this, and that this has probably been reported with added "mirch-masala" by the Indian media (not the first time, that's for sure).

I'm sorry, buddy. It's not we who mis-read or mis-interpret things, its your people who mis-report them. Gen. Majid, by allowing room for mis-communication, has displayed what is known as professionalism. Professionalism, if we take the Indian media reports to be true, is something Gen. Kapoor has chosen to do away with recently.

I personally think that Gen Depak's statement has created an air similar to that of Cuban missile crises ...
No it hasn't. The Cuban Missile Crisis was very, very serious, this is not at all comparable. This just the usual back-and-forth, not unlike the ones during the Cold War era. It's sad that we still have to go through this, but that's just how thing are.

But surprisingly our indian members knew exactly what deepak kapoor said for us we only rely on what has been reported by media.
I still remember once india army was reported as saying that they are going to hit 5000 key targets inside Pakistan! i wonder if that was also media hype.
In any case indian army cheif should correct all misreported news attributed to him.

So the indian army chief is actually making these statements out of Fear of being attacked by China and Pakistan .
I personally feel that Indian military is quite agitated with the Chinese developments along their border as it dosent gives the IA the room of having any sort of adventure with PA .Plus it also softens up the threat to PA which was once posed by the presence of huge number of troops along the Pakistani Border .But a part of it is now moved to counter the Chinese threat softening up the threat to PA .

lacking acumen would be an understatement. This man seems confident through means of empty jingoism that it can take on 2 nearby nuclear countries concurrently.

india already learned a valuable lesson in 1962, and india already learned that Pakistan can defend its territory against foreign enemy.

it seems CJSC Gen. Majid gives gen kapoor benefit of the doubt when he says
he [kapoor] could not be so “outlandish in strategic postulations to put India on a self-destructive path”.

it doesnt matter what the intentions were...when indians make such silly statements, they better expect that there will be a response from our side.

It is also proof that we can not let our guard down from the enemy on the east. We must not, and we will not let our guard down.

You bring up a good point. Our concerns from the East have been questioned by some international diplomats as unfounded. They complain that we do not require as much caution on the Eastern front, and should commit more resources on the Western side. I remember someone saying that a figure of roughly 30,000 soldiers in and around FATA to combat terrorists was not enough, and that we must put more troops there.

Well, now, I feel like thanking Gen. Kapoor (or the Indian media, whichever is responsible here). Next time somebody says we can afford to "thin" our force on the East, all we have to do is refer them to these recent reports, as well as some of the ones issued after Bombay attacks by the ingenious Pranab Mukharjee, AK Antony and the gang.

blackbriar, stop whining like a child. Speak about the issue at hand, don't come in with your media-hyped propaganda trying to derail the thread. You're doing more damage to the Indians with this than good, don't let your country down like this. Show some self-control.
