What's new

Indian army chief arrives June 19.To meet Bangladesh PM & President.

Very close relations? Which relations above that of any-other standard country to country or military to military relations are you talking about.

They come to join the Vijay Diwas Celebrations (Liberation of Bangladesh) every year.

I am not what is the latest, but they attended military courses in India, to include NDC.

.
Well the relationship is surely on the mend.

WOW a gift of 6 horses... LOL...SORRY roy my man, is that the best you could come up with to show how friendly the two armies are?

The truth is the ties between IA and BA is way lower then that of South korea, Indonesia, ......let anlone their main supplier and support provider China.

Its about gesture, besides I said the relationship is on the mend. Am sure if Bangladesh asked for weapons, India would be more than happy to help. But then that would send the conspiracy theorist in over drive.

Trust is lacking, and regular visits by senior military officials from both sides will help.

Yea most nations have exchange programmes, IA have been through many of our training programmes, as have other nations including the US, what does that prove? There are NO "special relationship" between the two, it's just standard procedure between nations.

Bangladesh ask for weapons from India, are you mad? There is a standing policy of not incorporating any indian eqip, the army is not too happy with how close the current gov is to it's neighbour, and hasina don't trust the army.

Sourcing eqp from india would piss the top brass big time, not something she would or should consider if she wants to stay alive.

Its the BA who wants to keep a polite distance.

Thats exactly what I said. So senior official level military exchange is a good way to start, to get rid of this "trust deficit". 2009 saw the first ever joint military exercise between India and Bangladesh. I am hoping to hear more such news after this visit by the Indian COAS.

You can't remove this "trust deficit", how ever many military exchanges you have. The premiss of BA is to deter and plan to fight any external threats, who do you think is the threat preception in most National Defence Course (NDC) and Armed Forces War Course (AFWC).

As the IA grows in relation to the indian economy, so does this preception, real or imaginary. So you see there is no chance of "very close relationship" between the two.

I will give you an example:

One of the scenarios looks at what if there is large scale conflict over AP and China moves forces over the border (implausible, I know, but they look at all possibilities), what probable actions could india take, how fast could they shift assets into the sectors?

If they can’t move these assets through the Siliguri Corridor efficiently, would there be move to use Bangladeshi territory?

Worth a shot anyways.

Besides Bangladesh can't really see any other country as a threat perception, being surrounded by India. Although I doubt India would ever try anything militarily against Bangladesh. Yes if the population of Bangladesh was like 20-30 Million then yes that would be a different story.

I hope you realize that if India ever invades BD then BD will turn into a Taliban-like country? Because if India occupies BD then only the fanatics will have the guts to fight back.

Unless a nation has good relations, it does not invite foreign military candidates to participate in its course or exercises.

I seriously doubt that. Indian invasion is unlikely. In the event of an invasion everyone will be on board.

Why should India invade Bangladesh?

What has Bangladesh done to irk India that she requires to invade and turn Bangladesh into a Taliban controlled country?

If we did not stay in 1971, is there any reason why we should occupy Bangladesh?

I have not understood the logic.

Tikis please don’t confuse the gov to gov relationship with the relationship between the 2 armies. We currently have a very pro india gov headed by hasina, and as govs change so do policies. The doctrines of the armed forces are far more static, our discussion is about the supposed close relationship between the BA and the IA.

We have had officers from practically every nation that we have formal relationship with attend these courses included Pakistan and india, plus Palestine. None of this exercises and exchange programmes imply any close or special relationship between the two.

In India, the Army is not an independent body that it can operate on its own agenda.

Doctrines are not static. They are constantly honed.

We have also had officers from Palestine, including a lady officer.

But we have had no officer from China or Pakistan and neither has Pakistan or China had any of ours!

The bottom line is relationship govt to govt.

Gradation of relationship is merely semantics, in my way of looking at the issue.
