Indian archaeologists refute claim Taj Mahal was once a Hindu temple

Archaeologists have refuted a petition by six Indian lawyers claiming that the iconic Taj Mahal, built by a Mughal emperor in the 17th century as a mausoleum to his dead wife, was in reality a Hindu temple.

In a statement filed last week in the district court at Agra, where the Taj is located, the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) refused to accept the contention that the world heritage site was built on a temple dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction.

The organisation was responding to an April 2015 petition filed by six Hindu lawyers who maintained that the resplendent Taj’s original name was Tejo Mahalaya.

The lawyers demanded that Shiva’s followers be allowed to perform puja or prayers and aarti, a Hindu ritual in which light from wicks soaked in butter are offered to the deity.

Presently Muslims are allowed to offer prayer at the Taj which also doubles for them as a mosque where, unlike Hindu temples, any manifestation of ritual is banned.

Claims that the Taj is a Hindu temple have surfaced occasionally since 1989, when a book was published claiming it was built before Muslim invaders came to India.

Northern India has seen an increasing crackdown on Muslims since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government assumed office nearly three years ago, including forbidding beef in some states.

“This kind of litigation has emerged after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014," said social activist Seema Mustafa of the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi.

"Encouraged by the BJP these litigants seem to enjoy a perverse legitimacy amongst its supporters by denigrating Muslims who ruled over India for over 900 years till the advent of British rule in the 18th century."

Historians have claimed the Hindu nationalists were seeking "revenge on history".

“There should not be a problem with multiple perspectives” said Professor Aditya Mukherjee from New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru university. But, he added, "you can’t treat imagination as history".

This is ridiculous. How can these archaeologists insult our "Professor" PN Oak.

LOL What's Your take in ASI finding of Ram lal temple
ASI never claimed that it was Ram Lalla's temple, it just stated that there is a temple like structure and even that is being contested. The below links are for your reference.

Earlier excavations had unearthed animal bones and even human remains which could not have been there if the place was indeed a temple. Presence of animal bones, they had been arguing, meant that it was a residential area (and not a shrine) inhabited by a non-vegetarian community.

(C) VERBATIM GIST OF THE FINDINGS BY
HON’BLE MR. JUSTICE SUDHIR AGARWAL
1. The area covered under the central dome of the disputed structure is the birthplace of
Lord Rama as per faith and belief of Hindus.

2. Disputed structure was always treated, considered and believed to be a mosque and
practised by Mohammedans for worship accordingly. However, it has not been proved
that it was built during the reign of Babar in 1528.
3. In the absence of any otherwise pleadings and material it is difficult to hold as to when
and by whom the disputed structure was constructed but this much is clear that the same
was constructed before the visit of Joseph Tieffenthaler in Oudh area between 1766 to
1771.
4. The building in dispute was constructed after demolition of Non- Islamic religious
structure, i.e., a Hindu temple.

5. The idols were kept under the central dome of the disputed structure in the night of
22nd/23rd December 1949. Other Original Suits no. 3 of 1989 and 4 of 1989 are barr

ASI (Archeological Survey of India) has done 5 surveys in total on that disputed site from the year 1862–63 to 2003.

Out of these 5 surveys, 4 cleary stated the association of Ayodhya with the traditions of Rama and asserted that the present-day Ayodhya was the Ayodhya of the Ramayana years.

The last ASI survey report also said there is sufficient proof of existence of a massive and monumental structure having a minimum dimension of 50x30 metres in north-south and east-west directions respectively just below the disputed structure.

The report concluded that it was over the top of this construction during the early 16th century that the disputed structure was constructed directly resting over it.

Also Radar search done by Canadian geophysicist Claude Robillard in the year 2003 stated as :

Three inscriptions were found after the demolishion in 1992. Most prominent was Vishnu Hari inscription.

Also, Pillar bases were first discovered by the ASI's former director-general, BB Lal, in 1975.

The human remain was of the Kar sevak who died when the babri masjid collapsed on him. This was proven by the depth in which the body was found.

Ironically it was a Muslim Archeologist who identified that the remains were of a Hindu temple.

Isis and Hindutva now have another thing that is similar between them (amongst many)... they both have a disdain for history and wish to destroy it and remake it in their own image.
