Indian-American Raj Dutt, an IIT-Kharagpur alumnus, has developed a next-generation energy-efficient computer chip that has caught the attention of the Pentagon, which is testing its application in the ambitious F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

The breakthrough technology by Dutt, Chairman and CEO of privately-held APIC Corp and Photonic Corp, helps computer processors consume up to 90 per cent less energy and run up to 60 per cent faster.

"The significance of the technology is that information transfer on the semiconductor chip as well as between components, will now be done using light - photons - instead of just electrons (electronics)," California-based Dutt told PTI.

There are many advantages in size, weight and especially power consumed, he explained during his recent trip to Washington, where he met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Photons do not generate heat, thus thy do not need to be cooled. For electronics, cooling is one of the largest cost components.

"Photonic interconnects do not generate heat and use less size than electronic copper interconnects, so more transistors can be put onto a chip. Most significantly, we have figured out how to do this using the same economical process used in manufacturing semiconductor chips today, enabling them to be stamped out by the millions," Dutt said.

Well aware with the potential of the computer chip, the US Department of Defence is fully supporting Dutt and his company. The Pentagon is testing the chip's application in the ambitious F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

india sure has produced some great minds.....i am a big fan of Dr. kashiyap.....the only man who produced cold fusion.
too bad all of them immigrate and none of them works for india.

We faced this problem a lot before, and still we are facing it to a great extent.
This is what we call "Brain drain",i.e. talented people moving to other developed countries where there are more opportunities to apply and use their skill.
The developed countries like US or UK provides a higher budget for R&D,in comparison to poorer countries like India.

But the scenario is changing fast, and good thing is the pace is faster than what we expected.
The Institutes for higher studies like the IITs,the IISc,CMERI etc. have lots of funds these days and it is increasing each year.
Now we are experiencing a "Reverse Brain drain",i.e those Indian who had migrated to other developed countries for better opportunities are now coming back.Hope the trend will continue.changes will not take place overnight, but the trend is good.

And what do you want the best and the brightest minds of iit to do?? Wait in line for a govt. job (a.k.a researcher) with a mere salary of 50k per month. Is that what you pay to the best?? I know the utopian patriotism and stuffs but my friend the only god on earth is MONEY. People can go to hell if they don't pay me according to my merit. And also don't forget the recent "my dear good friend" attitude of the west esp. US towards India is because of these people

Do you think I do not know what the Americans do. Well listen , The People who get Nobels are offered free citizenship and given surplus grands to do there research in the field they like. And Students who are seen as having great minds are taken through the different MOU's Signed with Indian Universities and are seduced to an extent they never feel they could do anything in India.

Money is not an ultimate being but a necessary component to run a life.

The reason why such minds don't stay is because of the rot in our system, the lack of encouragement and the lack of research. We have ZERO research in every field compared to Western countries or even countries like Korea and Japan who are miles ahead in invention.

On the other hand, our people are trained to memorize and repeat mechanically. Hence bright innovative minds leave for greener pastures rather than stick and rot in this polluted politicized and corrupt system.

Why blame them? Blame the common Indian for not uprooting this governance of evil. This includes all Indians here including me as well. We should be ashamed of ourselves for this. Had this been a sane governing system, this guy could be making the chip to test AMCA first test model rather than F-35.

Another reason why this government must be bunted out.

This is your imagination. Majority of people want equal returns for their hardwork that they did so dedicatedly. We are not saints and monks to not expect anything in return. Those who achieve big must deserve good. Which means that the typical sarkari rusted positions of "researchers" at INR 50K is not going to keep a single talented soul here. As long as our defense is in governmental hands, nothing will work.

It has to be privatized and corporatized like USA and Europe to bring any effect.

True,You would have to be extremely lucky or bribe your way in to get that government appointed researcher position as well. Most of it usually to go to the relatives of the selection committee or goes to reservation quotas. The best and the brightest be damned!

As for research grants given out by the government to the premier institutes IIT/IIMs,The figures are as low as a paltry 20 crore for the entire year of 2011!!!

and you will know what happened to this man.I was among one of the thousands of sympathisers of this man..
disgracing such geniuses isnt limited to india or pakistan..happens everywhere

True and the reson is Funding and environment. If India keeps at this pace,

expect such people coming back here and pumping all that know how back into there motherland....Tht has happens with people like Manmohan sing and many others running our institutions.

So its not all bad...

If India sets up electronic/semiconductor facilities and Factories in the future...who do u think such people will help first?

Mainly in our countries, man. Because of evil ruling both the nations. Your PPP and our CONgress especially, with rest included. The political system has to be radically changed if great people are to be honored.

About chip manufacturing and programming...i dont know if there are any silicon chip founderies in india.....but the most used silivon chips to much extent have been designed in.Bangalore??
intel and Nvidia have research centes there and these two companies churn out top selling processors and graphics cards every year...
bu there is no name of india on it...although much of it was conceived by an.indian.in.india.
now is the time india should promote herself as a brand not just a low cost outsourcing destination.
