Indian aircraft carrier enters sea trials as navy eyes Rafale

.
one silly question...can F-35 be operated from STOBAR configuration???and if yes, then why we need EMALS because, then we have to modify our AC..right??

.
What's wrong with Mig 29K?
There were reports even Russian Navy is going for Mig 29K with indian specification and dropping their Sukhoi. Then it must be good.
Plus what happens, if Hindustan Aeronautics and Sukhoi decided to go for naval FGFA?

The arrested landing is the same as on CATOBAR carriers, it is the take off that makes the difference and here the C might not offer enough thrust, because it has to take off unassisted.

They didn't dropped the Su 33, it was simply not worth it to develop an upgraded version of it, since their long term plans include a naval Pak Fa. They took the Mig 29K because we funded some of the developments, remember IN will be the prime customer with 45 x Migs, while Russian Navy just get 24. It's not a bad fighter, but not comparable to Rafale, F18SH and most likely not even to J15.
Sukhoi has offered HAL to do the naval redesign, obviously to safe the money if they have to do it alone, but having such a big fighter requires more space on a carrier and it is more likely that HAL and IN will go for a naval version of AMCA in future.

Who india going to confront with this ship?? Even Russia with profile of challenging US does not operate any carrier at the moment. Besides, millions of poor Indians could come out of poverty with this kind of money but india choose to use billions on something that will not have much value unless india prepare to go for major war. Even then in the age of anti-access weapon, this carrier will be COOL target.

Atleast you won't be able to.....what's your defense budget..this ship costs$2.3 billion..go compare.....and BTW even Pakistanis are bored with using this poverty card, but you are ranting same old stuff.

It is questionable if the F-35 could take off unassisted from a STOBAR carrier with any sort of useful wepons/fuel load. EMALS offers the same advantages as current steam catapults- the ability for heavy fighters with large weapons loads and plenty of fuel to take-off from a shorter distance. Comparably it has already been stated the Mig-29Ks will struggle to take off with decent weapons loads AND decent fuel loads- the IN is getting around this by using other Ks as AARs with buddy-buddy refueling. Additionally EMALS gives the advantage it allows heavy a/c such as E-2 AWACS and C-2 Greyhounds operate from the deck of an ACC. It is for this reason all large ACCs are configured in this way and why IN are going that way. And EMALS is only being only being considered for ACCs IAC 2- so no retro-fitting would be nessercary to existing ACCs and the system can be designed into the original plans- conversely equipping an ACC with a ski-ramp still requires work and modifications. If the system is planned for ahead of actual construction there should be very little issues (unlike the huge ****up that was trying to retro-fit EMALS onto RN QE class ACCs and then giving up) and EMALS is actually less expensive to run and maintain over steam catapults as well as taking up far less space than all the systems that go into making steam catapults work.

Mig-29K is a great and very able fighter but Rafale, F-18 Silent Hornet and F-35 are just much better, end of. If IN/HAL decides to go for a N-FGFA we are looking at 2027- at the earliest for first flights and IOCs so some time out from actually seeing it in IN service so this particular procurement can't be postponed until then. If the N-FGFA were to come to fruition it would likely operate off IAC 4- which (speculation) would most likely be pretty large (70/80,000+ tonnes) so able to operate such large fighters.

It does pose an interesting scenerio- would they rule out the F-35 flat-out because they are adverse to operating multiple 5th gen fighters or would they be indifferent to this and just concerned with getting the best fighters they possibly can.

This is not about comparing some one else. Its about few true facts:

1) Unless india plan to go for big war this carrier is show piece.
2) Even in such big war this $2.3 billion carrier will be COOL target of anti access weapons
3) Millions of indian poor could come out of abject poverty, hundred of thousands of farmers who killed themselves for loan burden could survived. What a waste of life and resource! Perhaps value of life in india is much less than elsewhere in the world.
AC never sail alone...have you heard of carrier battle group....China is beefing up its presence in SCS and wants to move into Indian ocean...that's why we have plan to have 6 CBG.....so educate yourself more...learn what strategic significance AC have....as far as poverty is concerned, we brought 200 million people out of poverty in 2 decades, more than your entire population...and we are doing thi at good rate...poverty is btw banned topic....

It's funny that a Bangladeshi chooses to talk about poverty! looool Oh well.

Bangladesh is the worst performing state in entire South Asia. Lowest income, lowest HDI, lowest literacy, lowest everything!

What other ship in indian carrier battle group will do? Just watch incoming hit from hundreds of miles away. Once carrier is crippled other ship out to defend itself. Six carrier battle group with sinking economy and upto neck debt burden, not to mention facing foe much wealthy and potent - even hindi movie has more realistic plot.

And for indian poverty, here is a good touch of reality.

India govt. accused of concealing poverty by lowering poverty line to 44 cents per day

Don't worry, poor Indians are escaping poverty by jumping the fence into bangladesh. Oh wait, it's the other way round. Hmm.

Indian navy has operated aircraft carriers continously for 50 years, and none of them have ever been hit. In fact, no aircraft carrier in the world has been hit since WW-2. On the other hand, our aircraft carrier launched sea hawks that bombed the governor general's residence in Dhaka in '71, sending a clear message to pakistan that no territory is safe from Indian navy's air wing. This was instrumental in their surrender, and the subsequent birth of a nation now known as bangladesh. So you will forgive us for being complacent that our aircraft carriers are a little safer than you think. We have more faith in the Indian naval officers' faith in aircraft carriers than your lack of it. Heck, if it comes to that, we have more faith in our coast guard to fight a war than your entire navy, let alone you.

Also, you shouldn't comment on threads or topics you know nothing about. Read about Soviet or Indian navy's doctrines to know what carriers do in our navy today, what role they play. It is completely different from what american carriers do. Fleet protection is the primary task of these carriers, and that ensures complete naval supremacy for other Indian naval ships in its region of influence, over navies that don't have air cover away from shores. And the Indian navy is the only one (apart from the US) that is going to operationally field an aircraft carrier in the Indian ocean. Chinese carriers can't operate in the Indian ocean, just like Indian carriers can't operate in South China sea unhindered. So these carriers are going to ensure our naval supremacy in our area of interest, and that is why we require them.

I know I am wasting my time explaining all this to you, since your reply is predictably going to be about toilets or poverty, typical of people who don't really have anything to say on the subject at hand. But you will forgive us if we are in no mood to take poverty eradication lessons from the glorious nation of bangladesh.

Nice looking target for enemy missiles, until then it will be good show piece.

Yes, it would be great to see if Rafale get hit by BD jet trainers.

Soja bacche, tumhare kaam ki cheez nahe hai! Bahut mahngi hai!!!

Exactly, BD would have given every inch for $2.3bn loan, but irony AC is much important for us
