The Indian Air Force's (IAF's) fleet of Su-30MKI multirole fighters has suffered 34 mid-air engine failures over a two-year period, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told parliament on 6 May.
These failures, which occurred between April 2014 and March 2016, had forced the fighters, which comprise the backbone of the IAF's combat fleet, to land with the help of just one of their two engines, the minister said.
"The original equipment manufacturer [OEM: Lyul'ka Saturn] has offered certain modifications or technological improvements for implementation in the production of new aero-engines and during the overhaul of engines," Parrikar said.
The minister said state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which licence-builds and maintains the Su-30MKIs and their Saturn AL-31FP engines, had implemented these modifications, but failed to provide further details.
