Indian Air Force Selects Taneja Aerospace For MiG-29 Life Cycle Upgradation


The Indian Air Force has selected Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL) for the life cycle upgradation of the MiG-29 fighter aircraft, the Times Of India reported Today.

Pune, India based TAAL competed with Tatas, L&T and Punj Lloyd among total eight bidders. Until now, IAF has outsourced minor jobs like manufacture of spares or allied services and was usually done through Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The project is worth over 12 crore INR ($2 million).

The project is aimed at increasing the life cycle of MiG-29s for a period of another 40 years. The IAF will be providing TAAL spares and components to be fitted in the aircraft. The job will be executed at the base repair depot (BRD) at Nashik. The BRDs come under IAF's maintenance command headquartered at Nagpur.

“IAF will provide training for the first two aircraft, after which it aims to finish four MiG-29s every three months.

IAF has close to 50 MiG-29s in all. The work will be jointly done by IAF and TAAL. Considering the size of the job, the company plans to hire experienced manpower from IAF and HAL,” TAAL CEO NC Agrawal was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

"The size of the contract may not be much, but TAAL finds that it will help the company go a long way. Even for us, it will be treading a new path with all its risks. However, it will provide an experience in an altogether new field," he added. He hoped that it will eventually lead to a private player being involved in making of a military aircraft.

A similar move is expected for the AN-32s, with the private vendor expected to be finalized within the next week, said a source in IAF.

This is for maintenance overhauls, which is different from upgradation which was done by Mikoyan.

Maintainance overhauls cannot increase the lifespan of the airframe, right? And BTW I think that that sentence ought to read "to a period of 40 years", not another additional 40 years.

I wonder how this does with in with the ongoing upgrade of the entire fleet to the UPG standard.

I feel like this is simply about maintaining the UPG birds for the remainder of their life span henceforth.

This has nothing to do with modernisation of Mig-29s of IAF because the modernisation programme was launched by India in 2009 in cooperation with RAC Mig & HAL. Apart from that In 2007, Russia gave HAL a license to manufacture 120 RD - 33 series 3 turbo-jet engines for the upgrade. This is a project of maintainance overhauls not modernisation.
TAAL has good experience in Aerospace sector, in past they had cooperated with Navy & Air force several times in number of modifications for their helicopters & aircrafts. They also build most of the structural assemblies for the Booster rockets of the GSLV program.

It is conservation maintenance of the airframes that is being spoken of. Which is MOH.

I don't think anyone thought this considering the MiG-29s are currently being upgraded ott eh UPG standard to serve for another 10-15 years.

Actually they did. Quoting some former Airforce personnel who was a think thank, as if they talk for the Airforce itself. Forgot who that fanboy was.
Jaguars will be prematurely retired, Fulcrums will be taken out before 2025.. all kinds of fanboy $hit.

Am also not sure about this . When we already looking to upgrade mig 29 to UPG standard .. so this must be for maintenance an replacement of parts and complete checking .

Never the less it's a good move to rope in private players who really need help for their survival . AN32 must also be given to another private company so works are done with given timeline

The front-line MiG-29 fighter units will share a total of 54 MiG-29UPG amongst them, plus eight MiG-29UUPG two-seaters.

The Fulcrums serve on four locations: with 8 Wing (47 and 223 Squadrons) at Adampur in the Punjab region facing Pakistan and China-controlled Tibet, with 33 Wing’s 28 Squadron at Jamnagar towards the Pakistani Karachi area and the Indian Ocean, and with 28 Squadron’s detachment at Leh in the Himalayas/Kashmir region in the far north.

The seven remaining MiG-29UPGs will be held as attrition replacement or when the other aircraft will go in maintenance
