1. Maybe older but first degree issuing institute was a madarsa... The degree was called 'Ijaza' and it was as old as 9th century in Morocco. Do give it a search.
2. If you ever go to the famous European old libraries, you'll have a chance to look at what those madarsas achievements were from inventing 'Algebra' to being the pioneer in 'surgery' and surgical instruments. From developing first camera (pinhole camera) to being called Father of Chemistry by Europeans. Your viewpoint about madarsa is exactly same as those terrorists' viewpoints... So there ain't a lot of difference between both of these thoughts which aren't normal Muslims belief. And if madarsa was what you claim then who the results started after USSR invaison on Afghanistan? After CIA and Mossads massive training and fundings here? Well no need to go into a measuring contest. Madrassa used to be a Muslim equivalent to a Christian institute of learning which is now called a university. Like school and colleges Madrassas would offer degrees in theology, science and arts until the colonial powers deprived it of its empirical stature by decling to give govt jobs on madrassa qualifications.



And the subsequent reaction from the majority Muslim subjects was to completely boycott anything foreign including the imperial liberal education. Those few who got the drift of the abrupt change embraced the new order but not many had the foresight - - - - - - - -.



So this is basically how the colonial society got polarized. The clergy still is not ready to let go of their lil influence which they exert through madrassa, of course under the pretext of maintaining a touch with the gloriously indeginous nostalgia.
