i think it wont be as good a deal as it seems since , these subs will only be of 300km range as Russia being a member of Missile Technology Control Regime. and akula itself had a accidental history.suggestions that its cruise missiles could be modified to carry nuclear warheads appear very far-fetched, especially in the light of MTCR restrictions that we have here.

the shenanigans of Russia as we all know they dot thinks nothing before breaking written contracts to steeply hike prices of defense goods, now comes this news that 'Akula submarine delivery postponed indefinitely’. they will increase the price on it and the deal might go down.

sir the recent change in russian policy of hiking prices can be viewed in a different light. earlier during the soviet era the weapons were given or sold more in terms of a friendly relationship and mostly no high level weapon sales except aircraft were sold to india but presently russia is offering india the best it has ever produced moreover if you still compare the prices it will be lower than the rest. russia can no longer afford to sell weapons so cheap *** more funds are needed to keep the R&d going but if you compare the price to efficiency ratio its still better than many others.

its about market commitments . as we know what happned in mig-29 development, su30, ship carrier etc etc. in all the cases - there have been changes in final cost of product. and to be a better salesmen russian need to be more professional about it.
i know India is buying better and on par equipment which Russian use themselves. but there has to be a professional level. and the political ties always make things done as happened in ship carrier deal the Russian prime minister arrived. which made the deal possible or else it was going down.
i personally like the idea what Russian provide for what they get paid. thats is a different matter all together.
Russian don't know how to market or else for cheaper value and advanced technology they should lead the sale. but they don't...

That is not right.
In fact India used to get the latest weapon systems sometimes before even Warsaw pact countries during the Soviet era. It used to be directly cleared by the Polit Bureau.
And again changing prices mid stream is damaging Russia's fair name in the defense market. We have high regards for Russia but this will surely put a strain and damage Russia' credibility as a reliable supplier. Probably very short term thinking!

Guys I think we need to look at both sides of coin. It is not fair to blame other side blatantly. When a contract is signed there are certain terms and conditions are agreed upon. But in a multi year deal or a single huge deal there are mistakes that happen it's common. Now these deals are defense deals and we obviously don't know the terms and conditions that are applicable. There are mistakes from both sides.
sir probably you are right in this regard, but changing prices midways is a big concern it has to do more with political and diplomatic conditions, the goroshkov price was hiked after india supported the us missile defence system. its true that the credibility is hampered but there is too much of money involved so they dont want to take passive actions for any reaction.

no it was not because of this. The Sevmesh yard has miscalculated the work. There chief was fired because of this fiasco. Gorshakov deal was never an individual deal. It is a package deal.

New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) Denying reports of Russia indefinitely delaying the delivery of a nuclear submarine to India, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta today said the vessel would certainly be inducted, but with a slight delay.
"The delay is only till the ship is put to the sea. It will be in due course of time handed over," Mehta told reporters on the sidelines of a Nat-Geo Mission Navy function here.
However, he did not give any time frame for the vessel to join the Navy fleet, as Moscow was still probing the mishap that took place on its newly-built submarine, Nerpa, during sea trials in November last year.
India has entered into an agreement with Russia for the latter to lease an Akula-II class nuclear submarine for 10 years to train its personnel to operate the indigenous Advanced Technology Vessel currently under construction.
However, the Indian efforts suffered a setback as Nerpa reported a fire mishap on-board during sea trials in which 20 sailors were killed.
On the issue of renewed price negotiations for Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, the Navy chief said a committee was discussing the matter with the Russians to arrive at the right cost for the refit of the warship, which would be the largest in the Indian Navy fleet after induction.
"It will take some time. The committee is got to work with the Russians to clearly identify the correct cost of the items that have been put in in addition to what the contract was for," Mehta said. PTI

Sea trials of the submarine have been halted as the shipyard cited difficulties in reconstituting another pre-delivery trials team.
The Indian naval delegation is to present a report on the induction of the submarine following the accidental triggering off of a fire fighting system on board the submarine which killed 20 shipyard personnel and Russian crewmen during sea trials in November last year. The delegation will also lay flowers on the wreath of the dead shipyard workers and naval crew.
Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta recently expressed confidence that the navy would induct the Nerpa on time. The submarine is being leased to the Indian Navy as the Chakra for a ten year lease under a $ 650 million deal signed in January 2004. The submarine was to be earlier inducted on August 15 last year but delayed due to technical glitches.

Moscow, May 11: Russia is expected to deliver the Akula-class nuclear-powered submarine to India by the end of this year as the shipyard has repaired the damage caused by the mishap during sea trials in November in which 20 sailors and technical staff were killed.
"The repairs are complete and the vessel is technically ready for the resumption of sea trials," an official of the Amur Shipyard was quoted as saying by Interfax.
According to the director of the shipyard Nikolai Povzyk the "aim is to deliver the vessel by the end of this year."
"We are completing the enrolment of trial team, which will have to finish trials and deliver the submarine to the Indian side by the end of this year," Povzyk said.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin today announced plans to provide funds to the Amur Shipyard for the completion of the Indian order. However, details of the funding were not known.
Russia was to deliver the Akula-II Class nuclear attack submarine to the Indian Navy on a 10-year lease in June.

Putin visited the Amur shipyard on Monday and Presidential envoy Viktor Ishayev later said: Putin discussed in detail the Indian submarine project and ordered speedy completion of new trials and the vessel delivered to the Indian Navy by the end of this year.
He said Putin had decided to re-instate state control on the strategic shipyard situated in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in the Khabarovsk region bordering China. The Prime Minister will sign the orders within a week to release 1.1 billion roubles ($300 million) to foot the bill for the repair of the submarine and complete pre-delivery trials, Ishayev said.
Russia was to deliver the Akula-II class submarine to the Indian Navy on a 10-year lease in June. But the project was delayed as the submarine, earmarked for India, met with an accident on November 8 last year, killing 20 sailors and injuring 17 others. But the shipyard has repaired the damage caused during sea trials.

VLADIVOSTOK, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - New sea trials of the Nerpa nuclear-powered submarine, which was damaged in a fatal accident during previous tests, will be conducted on June 15-20, Russia's Kommersant daily said on Wednesday.
On November 8 last year, while the Nerpa submarine was undergoing sea trials in the Sea of Japan, its on-board fire safety system went off, releasing deadly gas into the sleeping quarters. Three submariners and 17 shipyard workers were killed. There were 208 people, 81 of them submariners, on board the vessel at the time.
"Repairs on board the Nerpa submarine are almost complete," Kommersant quoted general director of the Amur shipyard Nikolai Povzyk as saying.
Povzyk said the Nerpa, which is due to be leased by the Indian Navy, could be ready by the yearend if the project received sufficient financing.
India has reportedly paid $650 million for a 10-year lease of the 12,000-ton Nerpa nuclear attack submarine. Indian media has reported that the construction of the vessel was partially financed by the country's government.
The accident on K-152 Nerpa, an Akula II class nuclear-powered attack submarine, was the Russian Navy's worst since the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine in 2000, which claimed the lives of all 118 personnel on board.
An investigation has supported the conclusion that the tragedy was caused by the mishandling of a temperature sensor on board which led to deadly Freon gas being released.
Submariner Dmitry Grobov has been charged with "involuntary manslaughter" for entering the wrong temperature data for the submarine's living quarters, which caused the fire suppression system to release the Freon gas.
