External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday said that China’s objection to India’s bid for NSG membership was all about the criteria and procedures to be adopted.

In a special press conference to highlight her ministry’s achievements in the last two years, Swaraj said that she said that India was hopeful that it will be able to convince China to give its backing.

The NSG follows the principle of unanimity and objection to its membership bid by even one country can put paid to its hopes of joining the 48-nation elite group.

Here are the highlights of her press conference;

  • India won’t protest entry of any nation in NSG, would want application be considered based on merits (On Pakistan’s bid for NSG membership)
  • India has always maintained that we want peaceful settlement on sea related issues
  • Its PM prerogative and I don’t want to comment on this (when asked about the possible cabinet reshuffle and if she would prefer her existing portfolio,)
  • I have no confirmation or proof on Indians being killed in Iraq. In fact we have been informed that they are alive
  • Don’t know why the issue is being raked up, as everyone knows that the moment High Commissioner saw Mallya in audience he walked off
  • Indian HC was not at fault, Suhel Seth, if invites someone then HC has nothing to do with it
  • On Lalit Modi, we have not received any extradition request from ED
  • Once we receive the revised application from ED, we will forward the request
  • ED sent us extradition request for Vijay Mallya, our team suggested few changes which has been sent to ED
  • Our engagement with US has increased but not on the cost of nation’s interest. We also stage protest against them as and when required
  • Incidents of violence in Bangladesh unfortunate. Bangladesh government taking strong action againt it
  • Not correct to say that in the bid to secure membership in NSG, we have disregarded SAARC
  • NIA has not been denied permission to go to Pakistan and probe. Pakistan has only asked for time to conduct proper probe from their end (on Pathankot).
  • Foreign Secretary level talks between two nations (India and Pak) have not been cancelled but we are only awaiting probe from Pak side on Pathankot attack
  • We are trying to ensure that India becomes a member of NSG by the end of this year itself
  • PM Modi in matter of 10 months covered UAE, Saudi Arab, Iran and Qatar successful for better economic ties

.
Finally!

India caves in to Chinese demands at the cost of RSS consternation.
Prior tough principles of India got diluted after Doklam?

Long live treacherous Modi's India.

What a master stroke diplomacy- 'India wont object to pakistan but ok based on merit'.India know very well that pakistan will not get NSG based on merit, since many EU members object tooth and nail..

.
That was India's position since the beginning. Each application should be considered on merit, while China was trying to club India's membership with Pakistan's membership. So what is new?

NSG was created because of Indias nuclear programme, what merit does India have to enter? Its not even a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty.

Let the NSG discuss both India and Pakistani applications. India will have no problem with both applications discussed thoroughly. Let the NSG membership be given on merit.

Long live treacherous Modi's India.

India thinks because they gave us Bhutan's territory (Donglang) that we will in turn give them an NSG seat and a UNSC seat.

Exactly! Why are people treating this as some new development? This has always been India's position.

NSG was created because of Indias nuclear programme, what merit does India have to enter? Its not even a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty.

If India has no merit to enter NSG, Pakistan has even less. NPT is a discriminatory treaty that protects the P-5 from other countries encroaching on their nuclear privilege. Failure by NSG members to see that neither India nor Pakistan will give up its nukes is a pointless exercise. The nuclear genie is out. Might as well deal with it.

India thinks because they gave us Bhutan's territory (Donglang) that we will in turn give them an NSG seat and a UNSC seat.

India is not expecting anything from China because it's part of Gang of Five that discriminates against non-NPT states. Nevertheless, NSG is a prestige issue for India. It hasn't hindered India's civil or military nuclear programs.

.
it won't happen. we know.
both countries will join together or India won't. it's simple maths.

.
both should enter at same time or none. we dont trust bharat, Pakistan should maintain close contacts with China and all those countries who are against bharati membership on the basis of criteria.

We ain't dreaming of UNSC neither we want to be into the mess.
We just want to grow without polluting unlike what China did every city which was industrialised has been polluted.
We dont want to burn coal, Our Supreme Courts put very tough restriction for Coal mining & other mines. due to this Indian mining corporates ran to Australia.

That's foolishness
Nsg was started following first Indian nuclear bomb explosion.

Today we are getting nsg membership because it suits them.

Same applies to Pakistan
