Muslim community leaders in India are being watched, and their phone conversations are being held on a “party line,” according to the latest issue of the English weekly magazine, Outlook.

However, it's all Israel's fault, the Muslim leadership claims.

The report, which caused a flurry of outrage, said intelligence agents have been tapping and taping the phone calls of top community leaders in Muslim areas of Delhi, Lucknow and Hyderabad. Leaders of various political parties were targeted as well.

Political Affairs Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Mujtaba Farooq blamed the Jewish State for the violations of privacy. “The phone tapping of Muslim areas is the result of India's friendship with Israel,” he said.


This all shows that the government doubts the loyalty of Muslims and looks at them as anti-national.


The National Technical Research Organization (NTRO) is one of the agencies that has allegedly been carrying out the wiretapping. NTRO was created in 2005 following the Kargil war to deal with the technical aspects of intelligence-gathering. “The most intrusive of these systems are the off-the-air GSM/CDMA monitoring devices... sources estimate 90 such systems to have bought so far, enabling intelligence agents to track, hear and record cellphone conversations at will without even approaching the telecom companies,” reported the magazine.

An intelligence agent explained in the interview that the systems were being used “in the hope that we might pick up critical conversations” that could lead to terrorists.

Hidden cameras have also apparently been installed in some Muslim areas, said Dr. Tasleem Rahmani, president of the Muslim Political Council of India, who expressed the community's outrage: “This all shows that the government doubts the loyalty of Muslims and looks at them as anti-national.”



A Muslim parliamentarian, Asaduddin Owaisi, called on the government to tighten its controls over the “secret and intelligence agencies” and to bring them “under accountability

Actually most of leaders whose phones were tapped were non-Muslims.

But who knows, there could be some "profiling" as happens at US airports. If so, it would be regrettable, but perhaps made necessary by the actions of a misguided few.

The muslim leaders playin the victim card again. Can you imagine, they even managed to drag Israel into the scene.
I feel this pseudo secularism is the biggest enemy of India. I hate the word "minority", as it creates divide.

Mr. Owaisi is a Muslim whom Muslims living in pakistan would also despise if they knew him.His party exists and wins only in the old city area of hyderabad.He openly/nakedly plays the religion card.I have never heard him say people who elected me.He always says Muslims instead of people.While the rest of the city has transformed unbelievably , constituencies under his part are still in utter backwardness.He is a well known goonda himself and his party gives tickets to the biggest goondas of our city.He has many opponents in his own community and the accusations of his party being a goonda party is supported by them.
He goes on to say in state assembly that a person carrying jihadi literature should not be arrested.He goes on to say on national TV that entire india must be converted to Islam.He and his party are icons of intolerance.He is also said to have links with ISI and various terrorist organisations.Constituencies under his party have become hubs of ISI activity , Indian Mujahideen , SIMI etc.
His phone obviously will be tapped by any sane and responsible government.

Wait a minute, one person says something about Israel and suddenly its all Muslim leadership blaming Israel. Stretching the truth a little too much isn't it?

Israelis really need to get over their victim mentality. There is no doubt that spying on any Indian muslim or non-muslim without proper authorization is illegal and people involved should be punished in this.

Phones of all the politicians and leaders are being tapped,not just muslim leaders...If there is doubt on someone by the intelligence agents then they can tap phones of anyone in India wether they are mulsims,hindus,or anyone from any community...thats internal matter of India and its nothing new.

All indians plz be sensible.. say what wever you want atleast condemn the tapping of telephones weather of a muslim or hindu...

i think right from the 2nd post indians have hijaked this post and turned it into indian muslim politicans character assasination and lame game of defending Israel... and words like this proves me right... wot israel?? why israel?? i dont believe it israel ?? etc etc

I am really very happy the phone is being tapped....and I praise this move by the IB...good work....the phones of all the leaders are being tapped..wether hindu or muslim...if the phones are being tapped that means they are suspected to be involved in unscrupulous activities and this step by the intelligence agents can be very affective to detect the corrupt leaders of our country....

what made you think i haven't read the article?? i am from Pakistan and the things that indians member do (trolling without reading) doesn't mean every one else does the same..
