India wins five gold medals at Lisbon Physics Olympiad

Five students from India bagged gold medals at the 49th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2018) in Lisbon, Portugal, between July 21 and 28. This is India’s best ever performance in the IPhO in 21 years of participation.

India and China topped the medals tally with five golds each among 86 countries that participated. A total of 396 students from across the world took part, according to a statement from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), the national centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the nodal centre in the country for all science Olympiads.

Two boys from Kota (Lay Jain and Pawan Goyal), one from Mumbai (Bhaskar Gupta), one from Rajkot (Nishant Abhangi) and one from Kolkata (Siddharth Tiwary) bagged gold, said HBCSE which selects and trains teams representing India at the international Olympiads.

The IPhO competition consists of a theoretical and an experimental examination, each of five-hour duration. This year, the theoretical examination had questions based on LIGO detection of gravitational waves, the ATLAS instrument at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the physics of blood flow in living tissues and growth of tumours.

I keep telling that there is some great research work going on in IITs and IISC... As I'm always interested in defence, I don't focus on other fields while talking to my friends...

NDA government is spending a lot on R&D and also helping students and institutes in filing for patents... IIT Kanpur is working on stealth and drone tech... IIT Mumbai is doing some serious research on atomic and renewable energy... IIT Madras is almost ready to deliver something to ISRO and DRDO...

The fruits of these research will start showing by 2020... initially our problem was the brain drain and lack of opportunities in India...

govt of india did not invest in building industrial base as chinese have done , engineering students are being used by foreign companies .

Things are changing under this government... Mobile and defense manufacturing is the highlight... food processing and packaging industry is also expanding...

To spend like China we have to earn like China... and that cannot be done in India as fast as China did because of the democratic system we have... just take a look at bullet train, few farmers and one industrialist is enough to stop its work backed by slow court proceedings...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A team of five Taiwan secondary students snagged four gold medals and one silver medal at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Lisbon, Portugal this week.

IPhO is an international competition to encourage physics education among teens. The first Olympiad was attended by students from five countries in Poland in 1967, and has grown to attract over 400 students from 87 countries this year.

The Taiwan team finished third place overall in the competition, alongside delegations from Russia, South Korea, and Singapore. Student teams from China and India topped the Olympiad.

The troop was selected by Taiwan Normal University Department of Physics Professor Kao Hsien-chung (高賢忠) after rigorous testing. The boys first pass three rounds of qualifying competitions and then endured weeks of training in preparation for the event, according to CNA.

In overall IPhO individual rankings, Jian Guo Middle School student Chong Sang-hsuan (鍾尚軒) proudly finished 22nd.
