India will start Thorium-based Advanced Heavy Water Reactor(AHWR,300-MWe) project in next 18 months

Chennai, Feb. 21:

Tapping its abundant thorium reserves, the Government has decided to commence the construction of 300-MW thorium-based Advanced Heavy Water Reactor in the next 18 months, a senior official said on Tuesday.

“Under the third stage of nuclear programme based on thorium utilisation, a reactor of 300 MW will be constructed in a year and a half from now..,” Kalpakkam-based Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research Director, Mr S.C. Chetal, told reporters here.

“The work for that will commence in the next Five-Year Plan,” he said on the sidelines of a function.

According to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the currently known thorium reserves in India amount to 3,58,000 GWe-yr of electrical energy and can “easily meet the energy requirements during the next century and beyond.”

Mr Chetal said, a technology to separate uranium from thorium was being developed by BARC in the third phase of its nuclear programme.

collaborations

India was also having collaboration with France and the US.

“We will have reactors at different parts of the country... at Jaitapur in Maharashtra with the help of the French (1,650 MW) and with US, sites are being identified and target for nuclear energy is 20,000 MW. Today we have 4,780 MW,” he said.

Asked whether States were keen to set up nuclear power facilities, he replied in the affirmative.

“In fact, the rush is much from various States which are not able to fulfil (energy) requirements.

For example, we have potential sites at Hisar in Haryana and sites in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. We have demand from every State

A large part of construction of India's first Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam had been completed. .

“As of last month, 81.5 per cent of the construction is over,” Mr Prabhat Kumar, Project Director, Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd, said.

Business Line : Industry & Economy / Economy : Work on thorium-based reactor to commence soon

. . .
yup we started the work on thorium reactors some 2 decades back and now we are enjoying the fruits of hard work..
more work must be done to increase it to 1000mw range.. :)

this reactor is indeed revolutionary and the only one of a kind in thw world.

Most of these reactors will be state of the art and among first of its types in the world no doubt but almost all of them are more of experimental type. They thorium technology is still not mature yet to be viable as a commercial plant.

These thorium reactors currently being built are highly expensive and very very complex.

Lets hope the design matures soon and with almost 60% of world's thorium reserves ( recoverable and proven ) the day is not far when India can engage in energy diplomacy.

Also, the indigenous fast breeder tech from which 3rd stage is branching out will make us available tonnes of plutonium to make hundreds of Nuclear Bombs within a short notice.

That's great! Proud of our nuclear scientists! I just hope they are able to deliver without the stupid interventions of politically funded NGOs like the fiasco that happened in Koodankulam nuke plant.

We badly need nuclear power. 8 hours power cut in a hi-tech state like Tamil Nadu is unacceptable. Not in 2012.

Now if this is the situation of such a prominent state, then what to talk of other states that are seriously lagging behind.

The reactors need to be set up on an emergency basis.

i have no idea abt the cost of the reactor. but if india has decided to build 100s of them definitely they have thought abt the costs. thorium reactors r considered safer and better with reserves in hand. once large scale building on such reactors start in say in 2020, costs would also come down. they r also working on 1000 mw version of the reactor. and us had plans to build a similiar reactors way back but they stopped it. now india has made it and US wants cooperation with us on this.. its an awsome export material.

Thanks for the news..Awesome work done by our scientists and engineers.

Most of the thorium is found in the beaches of Kerala, I guess. So if anyone has an idea of kerala politics...you will know it will be very hard to extract. Idiotic Eviron mental people, NGO and the most hypocritic Green peace will camp in kerala to deny the extraction.

haha i am sure power of extraction of natural reserves is given to central govt

Thorium based reactor to be ready by 2014?? Wow thats a lot faster than I expected - I was thinking around 2020. Great Work by our scientists.

It won't be ready! They would start working on it in the next 5 year plan!

well 100s of reactors is the ultimate aim. But not of the current design. Also, India is the only nation going about it via Heavy reactor tech ( which involves separation of tritium from Heavy water. ). The tritium is a crucial part in Hydrogen bombs.

Most of other nations have taken the molten salt route. That design is much more safe than the Advanced heavy water reactors of India since the separated tritium can form a highly explosive gas very easily.

thanks kindaa sad they should start building it right now and make it operational by 2014. then nxt 5 year plan they could improve it and simultaneously built atleast 20 of these.

So from safety point of view molten salt or liquid fluorine reactors are better than the indian fast breeders but technologically which one is better? And why isnt india pursuing r&d in the more advanced molten salt reactors which is the trend among other countries working in this field. Also isnt the technology india is working on has been already tried and abandoned by Us,france, germany and russia way earlier,so why are we still working on this.
