India will set up 32 surveillance stations fitted with navigational military radars in Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives and Sri Lanka to keep an eye on the Chinese maritime traffic in the Indian Ocean region.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving for a five-day tour of the island nations, during which he would commission the first coastal surveillance radar system in the Mahe island in Seychelles.

The remaining seven stations in Seychelles would be up and running in the next six months. Five of them would be at Mahe whereas three would be located in outer islands.

While the prime minister was initially scheduled to visit all the four islands housing these coastal radars, Maldives was dropped out of his itinerary because of the ongoing political turmoil.

The India Ocean surveillance radar network comprises eight stations each in Seychelles and Mauritius and 10 in Maldives. Former defence minister A K Antony commissioned the snooping stations in Mauritius about two years ago.

The six units in Sri Lanka, however, do not have the radar at the moment but only the automatic identification system (AIS) and electro-optical instruments. Other islands would have all the three components – maritime navigational radar that operate in the I-band frequency, AIS for boats weighing more than 300 tonnes and the electro-optical system for imaging.

While the network would aid these islands to monitor their Exclusive Economic Zone, India can use the data to keep an eye on the Chinese maritime traffic.

“We have to do it for our own interest. Else, someone else (read China) will gain in the time we lose,” said a source.

The 10 coastal radar stations in Maldives are soon expected to receive the Cabinet approval. Navy chief Admiral R K Dhowan visited Mauritius in January when he reviewed the progress of several naval projects, including the coastal stations.

And All machinery is being used MADE IN CHINA

. .
So what Chinese would Place JAMMERS against that with the help of Sri Lankan Military Establishment COVERTLY. They have already BOUGHT Sri Lanka's Military Establishment so India can do little to take that Control because Sri Lankan Military wont be convinced as past 4 decades Indian Behavior is Widely known to them

Firstly, what are you, the spokesperson for the Sri Lankan/Chinese military?

Secondly you need to understand what these stations are, they are for monitering the coasts they are not overtly military facilties or "snooping stations" (they are elsewhere ;) )

Thirdly you think the Chinese could do anything like that without the Indians being aware?

Do you think Army of every other nation is for-sale?

1. Nothing to do with both just Observer.

2. Coast Monitoring Facilities can be utilized for Military Purposes so Sri Lanka wont be that Dumb to allow that without Contingency in Place and those Snooping Stations may be Located in North of Sri lanka where India have Favorable Demographics but Southern Coast which is Actually the STRATEGIC ONE is well under Chinese Influence;)

3. Chinese are doing lot of things Covertly and Overtly so dont Count on it that India knows everything.

For Sri Lanka I think not because they were then they would be on Indian Payroll.:enjoy:

The coastal survailence network will be for the entire Sri Lankan coast to plug into India's mainland coastal security network.

I don't know what kind of "contingency plan" the Sri Lankans can come up with, they are not France, this is a small nation who is not interested in playing these sort of chess games nor do they have the means to.

So, let me get this straight, in a tiny island just a few kms off the Indian coast covert activites of the scale you are talking about are able to go on without New Delhi knowing? This wouldn't have been possible under the previous SL govt let alone now. Sri Lanka is well within India's sphere of influence.

Please let us know what sort of jammers can be used against AIS and electro optical instruments. And do let us know what sort of a jammer placed in Sri Lanka can prevent a maritime RADAR in Maldives or Mauritus from monitoring ships in the Arabian sea and Indian Ocean. Even theoretically, what power would be needed for such a jammer, assuming that it could jam something so far away? All the electricity produced in the world? Here is a map, BTW:

Your loyalty and fidelity to big daddy China is commendable (though comical), but even they cannot overcome the limitations of physics. They are not gods, no matter what you have been told.

Sri Lankan Coast connected with Indian Mainland wont going to sit well with Sri Lankan Military Establishment in any way because its like giving Access to India to look after Sri Lanka when they have been Involved in lot of bad things in 4 Decades against them.

Contingency likely to be ACCESS to those Installation and their Data and in case if things went to wrong Direction then Seizing the Control

I didnt mentioned the SCALE of their Activities but I only mentioned Activities irrespective of large Scale or small Scale. Chinese dont need to start their Large Scale Activities so openly because they have already got a goodwill among Sri Lankan military and Sri Lankan Military buy most of their Weapons from China already so you know how it works Chinese would give them a Call and they would ACT.

OK I took my Jammer point Back so you think Sri Lankan Military Establishment which is buying most of their Weapons from China would sit duck when Chinese start asking them a Favor???

This thread is not about China asking favours. That's between them and SL. My response was only to your assertion that China will place magical jammers secretly. If you take that point back, I rest my case.

You are failing to appreciate that the world is not some fair utopian place, there are the "big boys" and the "juniors", Sri Lanka is the latter and thus the influence India has on the island cannot be underplayed, your weak arguments about Sri Lanka's ability to protect its own soveirengty ignore the numerous examples you have around the world where big nations are able to dictate terms to smaller nations with almost no backlash from the locals, look no futher than your own country where USAF and CIA drones operate with almost no accountability to your governement or military. Or what about the numerous US military installations around the world, are all of these scrutinised in the way you say by the host nations? No. Why? Because they are the JUNIOR partner.

Right, and like I have said, if you think any of this is goin unnoticed by India you are being naive. You are grossly overestimating China's postion on the island to a point that is most humerous.

Every Junior try to find a Bigger Bully in the Region to back them and that is even true for India as well which is trying its luck with USA against China. So dont think its merely a Fairy tale because its happening everywhere from Japan to America. Even USA have been Outsourced Defense of whole Countries so what do you expect. Sri Lanka is in Indian Backyard but they are not completely Helpless because they are Located in Strategically Important Area in Chinese Maritime Routes so dont think Chinese would let things go that easily as they are Expanding their Navy for a reason.

SL is Buying Weapons from China in a brought day light so either they arent scared or they want India to Notice something for which I chose first Part to Chinese are doing Most of their things Openly but their are lot of things which are better done Covertly like STRATEGIC PLANNING so India might have Knowledge of that as well but it doesnt mean they know Everything because Indian Intelligence mechanism has its Limits as well.
