Aircraft maker Airbus estimates that India will need more that 1,000 aircraft in the next 20 years.

Airbus president & CEO Tom Enders said on Friday that the 16% year-on-year increase in air traffic could translate into more aircraft sales. “India, next to China, is one of the biggest growth hubs for aviation,” Enders said. The company's forecast for China is around 3,000 aircraft over the same period.

“We will see a pretty dynamic market here. It might not be as big as it was in 2005 but it needed that number of planes then because India was kept down in terms of traffic in those days,” Airbus India president Kiran Rao said. “India will see a steady growth.”

Specifically, the company sees demand for 1,032 aircraft in India, Rao said. “If the market continues to expand as it is, then we will achieve this number in 10 years rather than 20 years.” The European plane maker expects to deliver between 20 and 30 aircraft per year over the next five years.

“2011 will see the start of the re-ordering phase of the Indian carriers. It has already started. We are starting to see them not so much ordering to buy, but ordering to lease aircraft,” said Rao. He added that this pattern of leasing would continue over the next couple of years. Meanwhile, company plans to double the headcount at the Airbus Engineering Centre India in Bangalore to 400 over the next three years, Enders said.

. . .
Yep and majority of them will be boeings..much for the Airbus ceo to milk holy cow!

another bozo comment. would you like to enlighten us how you came to this conclusion. this is not Air India buying a fleet of 1000, it airlines in India belonging Private sector as well as public sector, AirBus does have a good lineup that is economically attractive.

Airbus will get its worthy share of the pie.

. . .
Why not made in India "Air Bus" in future. here goes more jobs from western Air Bus to India Air Bus. :D

Good point here, and that would apply to Boieng too. As far as buying American is concerned, Air India is the only one who would succumb to govt. pressure to go boeing. But remember, the majority of aircraft purchases are from private Indian airlines, who are doing better than AI/IA combine. That is where Airbus scores.

Why just Boeing or, Airbus...?
I would like to see some Chinese Planes flying from Bangalore to Kolkata..
There should not be a monopoly of west in civil aviation. I am sure China,Russia , Brazil and some day India are capable enough to build these..
I am especially hopeful for chinese planes. They will cost less and can be procured in numbers ...

Let the private companies managed the airliners with-out government intervention, you will have a better propect. India has larger area which is very good for airline industry.

Take a page from Malaysia's Air Asia. We have a logo that said "Now Every One Can Fly", no joke, you can fly for as low as US1 + airport tax if you book the fare at the right moment. The CEO is Tony Fernandez who used to worked for British budget flyer Virgin Airlines. Air Asia is so successful that it added hundreds of air craft for a country as small as Malaysia. I believe India as well as many other countries can do it as well.

Ooh, here's a joke!

An Indian dude went on an aeroplane for the first time and packed home cooked food.

When it was time to eat, he took out his curry and the person next to him asked him what it was. He said "FOOD INDIA"

Then, the indian felt thirsty. He took out his packet of Lassi and the person next to him asked him what it was. He said "DRINK INDIA"

Then, finally finishing his filling food, he relaxed a bit and let out a loud and smelly fart from his backside. The person next to him stared at him and the Indian said "AIR INDIA"

No offense,
