Is it out of your own insecurity?

China is a all weather friend and ally, we feel proud and wish to emulate her success, that all - :victory:

Listen for decades you had something called the Hindu growth rate, and we were growing faster, the cool thing is even though growth has slowed, we are getting a massive bailout from the US, China, Gulf countries, also signs are that the economy is recovering.

Nearly 80 pct of India lives on half dollar a day | Reuters

Aug 10 (Reuters) - Seventy-seven percent of Indians -- about 836 million people -- live on less than half a dollar a day in one of the world's hottest economies, a government report said.

The state-run National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS) said most of those living on below 20 rupees (50 US cents) per day were from the informal labour sector with no job or social security, living in abject poverty.

Around 26 percent of India's population lives below the poverty line, which is defined as 12 rupees per day, said officials.

My God that is horrifying, even labourers in Pakistan make about 200 rupees a day, so 26 percent of the population would be about 290 million people live on 12 rupees a day. These people are literally starving to death. india has no moral authority to lecture anyone on poverty.

Don't you ever get tired of posting the same thing over and over again?

The same Russia, who sells us RD93 aircraft engines and Mi17 military helicopters and helped us purchase air to air refueller, that Russia LoL

That is false. 65% of Pakistanis and 75% of Indians live under $2 a day, which 33% of Pakistanis and 25% of Indians living under their respective national poverty lines.

I provided source which showed that 80% of Indians live below $0.5 a day. As Karan pointed out, that link may be 3 years old, but those numbers probably haven't changed much since.

Now where are you getting the number that 33% of Pakistanis live below the poverty line? It was 17% in 2008 as confirmed by WB.

Wrong, 75% of Indians live under $2 a day. Big difference boss.

I can confirm it through a Pakistani fanboi blog, in case you think it is propaganda.

I thought his blog was not credible? Anyway, I am getting this data from more credible sources.

Data from 2001. Way outdated. Latest data shows poverty rate of 17%. Which you'd agree is quite good.

This news was posted by reuters on 10 August 2007 and you are quoting it after 3+ years

I know few things about some Indian poor which will really help you to understand the issue.

1. Fake Below Poverty Line (BPL) Card holders: due to several benefits such as highly subsidize food and flats/houses several rich people are using fake BPL cards.

Give up fake ration cards before April or face music - The Times of India

52,000 fake beneficiaries of BPL ration cards in UP, govt cracks whip

You can get several other articles by using 'people using fake BPL cards in india' on google search.

2. on 12 rupees per day: In Delhi and NCR labour rate are high but I think that they are just around 20% more than in rural areas.

You will be shocked to know that even a tire puncture repairman take at least 20 INR per puncture and this is the lowest payment I'd made to anyone (axcept for paying for toffees and biscuits :partay: )

However, I'm not satisfied with India's growth because we have a long way to go and we need to work harder in order to achieve high living standards...

Guys don't fight about how many people are below poverty or not. There are too many people in both the countries and thats the bottomline.

While GDP is a proof of the economic might outside one's country, the true metrics to compare the lifestyle is the GDP per capita on a PPP scale. This truly reflects the purchasing power of an individual within a country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita

If you look at that list, India stands at 127th position (from IMF) with a GDP per capita (PPP) at $3015 whereas Pakistan stands at 133 at $2683. As you see not much of a difference there.

But given my argument towards this, what we should really discuss is the rate at which this is increasing. With a sustained growth rate and a much more stable govt India will continue to attract more money to invest in its economy.

Ok, well, if we're to go by the latest data, 75% of India lives below $2 a day and the same goes for 60% of Pakistan.

How do you know that... following link may help you to get better understanding

Because these numbers don't change much in 3 years. If it was like 8 years or something then you'd have a point.

What?!? You're saying you don't trust a PAKISTANI source?? Fine boss, I'll give you an authentic, non-Pakistani source, lol.

EarthTrends: Poverty: Population living on less than $2/day

Data from 2001. Way outdated. Latest data shows poverty rate of 17%. Which you'd agree is quite good.

The fact is, the situation hasn't changed much since 2001.
Here is another Pakistani source. Read carefully about how the Pak government deals with poverty estimates and how they don't actually match the reality.

They reported 17% when the actual figure would be around 35-40% (according to the Pakistani criteria for national poverty line).

Ok, well so it's 60% for Pakistanis and 75% for Indians.

Situation hasn't changed much? Of course it has. Where did our earlier economic growth in decade go?

Now as far as the data on poverty in Pakistan you're talking about - it has been confirmed to be 17% by WB. Now you probably won't know this, so I don't blame you, but the data about 36% was created by current PPP government to discredit the Musharraf government. There was a whole discussion on that in this forum.

The 17% poverty rate WAS according to definition of what we consider to be poverty, and it was confirmed so by WB. But again, PPP government didn't like this, so it inflated the numbers. I mean think about it, can poverty rate go up from 17% (2008) to 36% (2009) in a matter of one year?

It definitely can, yes, when a country is in a state of war and extreme instability. However, I do not think that is what happened. It is probably just an error in estimation.

Btw do you know what the criteria for the Pakistani national poverty line is, as opposed to the Indian national poverty line?
