First of all just for basic info, India participated in 1900 Olympics. But when do you call something united or homogeneous? Of you are talking of republics, then yes, its a recent concept. But various empires existed in past. People living in nearby states may have been one at some point of history. Different ethnicities, dialects, cultures, etc you see today in India developed over centuries as people spread out, so you can't say India was never a single entity. Moreover if you want to divide why stop at ethnicity. You can divide on the basis of sub ethnic groups, then clans, then families, and since each and every human being is different have different culture technically, we are a country with over 1 billion cultures, languages, accents, etc.

Let us put it this way. India was never, never a single polity before 1950. Whatever you say will not contradict this.

Too much is made of bangladesh being part of Pakistan. The 2 nation theory never failed. It increased to the 3 nation theory. If the 2 nation theory failed then bangladesh would have become a part of india. Truth is that bangladesh was never a part of the REAL Pakistan ever as they were 1000s of miles away from the Pakistan mainland, were a completely different race and culture to Pakistanis and had a completely different heritage to us. Whether india intervened or not, whether it happened in 1971, 1981, 1991 or 2001, bangladesh was always destined to seperate from the real Pakistan as they are completely different to us. In fact it would be more feasible for Pakistan to form a nation with Iran and/or Turkey as they are closer to us and Pakistanis have far more in common with Turks and Iranians then we do with bangladeshis. The creation of bangladesh was an inevitably that india exploited. No Pakistani feels we lost anything by bangladesh being created as most Pakistanis cannot relate to them.
