MUMBAI: Former Defence Minister George Fernandes today said India was aware of the assassination attempt on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf two years ago and had warned Islamabad two days before the attack took place in December 2003.


"We were aware that an attack was likely to take place on President Musharraf in 2003 two days before it happened and had warned the Pakistani authorities about it. We could have kept quiet about it, but we thought that as a humanitarian gesture we must warn them. He was shot at two days later but he survived," he said here while participating in a panel discussion on "Terrorism in Kashmir", PTI reported Saturday.
The peace process with Pakistan started by the NDA Government was an effort to bring the two nations together and although it was stopped for some time after that, it should continue, the JD(U) president said. "There are some people in Pakistan who do not like the dictatorship in that country. These people want to establish friendship with Indian people and this people-to-people contact should continue," Fernandes said.

there was any attempt to kill musharaf by shooting him dead???

i think the newspaper made an error...both attempts on mushy were by means of bombs and not by bullets or shooting.

1 bombs placed under the bridge
2. bombs in jeep/car which rammed his motorcade.

It would be an insignificant PR campaign to have revealed it back then. Generaly it is a norm to reveal these details after you out of power. Unlike Musharraf who makes 1 dramatic statement every 3 days. :-S

i wonder why the same humint doesnot work for india when it comes to

1. attacking indian parliament

i can go on..........these humint people working for india seem to me to be partial....baised against indian people.
