India warns US against military aid to Pakistan

India's defence minister cautioned the United States on Friday against military supplies to rival Pakistan, saying the hardware could be diverted to target India.

The warning came after the US in March said it would deliver unarmed drones to Pakistan and less than a month after it unveiled plans to transfer 600 million dollars to Islamabad to pay for anti-militant operations.

A. K. Antony told reporters in New Delhi that India's concerns had been conveyed to Washington.

"Even though the US is giving equipment to Pakistan to fight against the Taliban, we feel there is every possibility of (Pakistan) diverting most of them to the Indian borders," Antony said.

We have already conveyed our concerns about transfer of equipment to Pakistan. We told the US that they have to be careful about that," the Indian defence minister added.

Pakistan, Washington's frontline ally in its battle against militancy, has domestically produced surveillance drones but it told the US in March that it wanted sophisticated US-made aircraft.

The Pentagon soon said it would deliver "within a year" around a dozen unarmed drones to Islamabad to aid its fight against Al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents in Pakistan.

Last month-end, the United States also said some 600 million dollars would be paid to Pakistan to reimburse it for the operations over the past year against Islamic extremists.

India's military insists that some of the US supplied hardware and funds have been siphoned away by Pakistan allegedly to buttress its arsenal against its estranged South Asian neighbour.

The two countries have fought three wars since their independence from the British in 1947 and came close to a fourth conflict in 2001 following the attack India's national parliament by gunmen which India blamed on Pakistan.

“The military equipment that we are getting from the United States should not worry India, because it is meant for counter-terrorism and to enhance our capacity to fight terrorist networks,” he told reporters in Lahore.

“They (India) should not be afraid of this because it will be used against terrorist networks who have made this region unsafe.”

We are buying about 7 BN $ worth of weapons form USA right now. and if we add MMRCA deal( and Unfortunately which is going to happen ) then sum reach about 18 BN $

and in next decade India is going to spend around 100 BN behind hi tech weapons, and guess what USA IS THE BIGGEST ARM DEALER IN THE WORLD........

So yes India is in the position to warn USA to STOP giving Pakistan FREE WEAPONS.

The reason for this my dear friends is that USA is a clever and powerful counry, they will do what they want and they know India has hegemonic designs for South Asia that they might not like to see happen.

A report from early 90's indicated that India indeed has hegemonic designs and might have to be stopped. Where as indians keep saying that they are peace loving and only want good relations, others know better.

Containing Post-Soviet Threats - The document says that the US’s primary goal is “to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival, either on the territory of the former Soviet Union or elsewhere, that poses a threat on the order of that posed formerly by the Soviet Union.” It adds, “This is a dominant consideration underlying the new regional defense strategy and requires that we endeavor to prevent any hostile power from dominating a region whose resources would, under consolidated control, be sufficient to general global power.” In the Middle East and Southwest Asia, “our overall objective is to remain the predominant outside power in the region and preserve US and Western access to the region’s oil.” The document also asserts that the US will act to restrain what it calls India’s “hegemonic aspirations” in South Asia [New York Times, 5/23/1992]

So you either work with the asian bloc or work with the western bloc. You can decide what will be more beneficial in the long run.

India wants U.S. weapons becuase they don't want all their eggs in one basket (Russia). And they know that no one can match the U.S. technological edge. The Russians and Chinese generally are 5 - 15 years years behind the U.S. in fielding advanced weapons systems. Take the Russian S500 for example. It has not been built yet. Yet the U.S. is already fielding a block 2 version of the Standard Missile 3. Stealth technology countries are only now fielding prototypes. The next battlefield changing technology about to be fielded by the U.S. is lasers. Though most countries do laser research. None are near the Fielding stage the U.S. is.

India wants U.S. weapons becuase it is in India's interest. and the U.S. giving weapons to Pakistan is not going to change that.

USA is giving old weapons , after all it's free gift to pakistan.

Yes we want USA's weapon. but usa is not the only option available in the world for hi tech weapons beside Russia

Yes usa has the most advance weapon but we will not counter that weapons in battle field . USA will not give their best weapon technology to Pakistan or China Right?

So we can settle down with Russia and Europe's weapons.(Which india is doing since 1947).
