India wants Autocracy led by Modi: Pew Survey

Yours or mine?

most Indians are semi-literate, the idea of democracy, pluralism etc is not something they think is useful for India... the only reason we are still following democracy is because we are a federation of states(which are legitimate countries themselves), and its difficult to bring them together to agree on a strong central authority...
this is entirely believable and not at all a new development.... may be it has been made worse by the mythical hindu warrior king Modi... but the yearning for 'strong' leadership who is ready to commit violence if it matches my own idea/belief, has always been there among masses.
Could you be a little more liberal with the '-ve' rating.
You guys are old, you don't understand feelings of us youth. Modi speaks to our suppressed emotions and base instincts. He brings out those feelings in us which were repressed for generations over 1000 years. This is true human nature. ANd makes us feel good. He makes us youth want to follow him.

Gandhi was a Unnatural leader. Non violence is a un-natural concept. No youth will accept a weak leader like Gandhi. We youth need some one who can give it back to the adversary. No youth will like a leader who believes in showing the other cheek. Most of Indian population is youth.

If Subash Chandra Bose had succeeded, then Gandhi would have been in the dustbin of History.

Here is Modi who never lets us down. Modi let's us vent our hatred and frustration.

Old, you guys are, don't understand youthful feelings,
Modi speaks to our suppressed emotions and base instincts.

He brings out those emotions,
Repressed in us, for generations.

True human nature, this is.
Makes us feel good, makes us youth follow dikats.

Gandhi was a Unnatural leader.
Non violence an un-natural concept.

No youth will accept a weak leader like Gandhi.
If SC Bose had succeeded, Gandhi would've been in dustbin of History

We need someone who can give it back to the enemy.
So here is Modi who never lets us down, lets vent our hatred and despondency.

There.....
Go drop a mike!!

Friends, what should be make of such surveys?

Is there credence to it? It would be a waste if such trends gain more potency...all that freedom struggel and non-violence movement can not and must not result in blatant fascism.

Surely, Indian intellectuals will fight such a thing tooth and nail.

What is the role of your media? On which side of the divide it is now? Media can make or break this emerging dynamic.

You have a unique country and your own way of living... hopefully, it continues on the same lines.

Going by PDF the uncontrolled and irrational nationalism is not going to serve India well in short and long term. Patriotism is your brith right just like everyone else. But nationalism is cancer everywhere these days and growing.

One hopes to see reconciliation and at least mutual respect at least on PDF. Some of you do try. A new ethos needs to emerge and sooner.

Whereas Pak has paid in blood and treasure for misguided religious extremism..sadly, India is just starting on this path. Given the scale of India... one just can't imagine the outcome.

You do need a new Mahatama and pronto!

Regards,

Mangus

I thought a great deal of an appropriate response, and failed to find one. It would take a book.
One that might help:

An Anthropologist Among Historians and Other Essays

Bernard S. Cohn

What he has to say about Indian society is illuminating. I found many passages that made me exclaim,"Aha!"

People are not as sophisticated as all that. When they vote for autocracy , they just want a government that works. People are tired of roads being held up for decades by some dude with connections who wants to get rich enough for 10 lifetimes.

People want someone who can make babus actually work. And they think a strong leader will give them that. Nobody has thought this through as to what an autocracy will actually be like. ....and...amazing that the Chinese are so concerned about autocracy in India :woot:

i have sympathy for young people... its the 25+ adults I am angry about, they should know better... by this time they should have seen a few messaiahs, read a bit about how other countries work, may be travelled a bit.
if you are younger than 20, you have every right to be angry, have alternative view about how india came into being, lionize subash/bhagat singh/patel (obvious choice for teenagers) and think gandhi was a waste of time... I dont have any issues with that...

People are stupid. They need to be guided and led. Governance is a science, not an art. You vote for actors, singers, beauty pageants, but you don't vote for a company's CEO, or a scientist. The truth or the best solutions are more often than not in the minds of the brightest, the most skilled and knowledgeable - in other words the minority.

Political freedom is nothing but a feel good illusion. Yes you can say anything you want, but when everyone speaks and no one listens what you said is meaningless.

A multi party system is a breeding ground for losers. Each party takes turns to run the government. Only one winner emerges from an election. All the others are losers. The focus is on winning the elections, the freak shows, not how to lead the country. The result is the winner fail to keep their promises, fail the country. So the winner will become the loser in the next election. What do the losers do? They look for excuses. They blame everyone else except themselves. And a new cycle begins.

We are not obsessed with you. The truth is people in China barely put much thoughts on anything Indian. If you rather believe otherwise you may freely exercise your "freedom"

i support a one party system like that of china with bjp in power .

BJP in power as single party will not turn India into next China. It is amazing so few of you actually realize the fundamental difference between India and China.

To be honest, this is an alarming development, as people are willing to sacrifice democracy just for an unsubstantiated belief in one person.

Dangerous indeed. I see similar behaviour amongst some Pakistanis with regards to Imran Khan. Yes of the current lot he is by far the most desirable choice, but many people in South Asia take support to mean blind obediance. Leaders should be held accountable for their actions no matter how much we like them. Modi is evidently going to leave a very strong legacy behind, but if this will be positive or negative remains to be seen. The economy as far as I can see as an outsider is actually performing worse than during the preceding government, and this despite the fact that globally oil prices have fallen and the general global GDP is increasing (meaning that its domestic policies that are holding back Indian growth).
As far as geopolitics is concerned I've said it before and I will say it again, from a Pakistani POV, manmohan Singh was a far more dangerous adversary. Sure Modi engages in a lot of chest thumping but ultimately his "isolate Pakistan" goal has backfired. Pakistan was more isolated prior to him.

Bro, India and Pakistan are stupid countries. Democracy is such a waste in the hands of stupid people.
China wasn't different when they started, CCP saved China from falling to the whims and fancies of it's illiterate masses.
Fact of the matter is that we need a small set of patriots operating on a higher plane of awareness to lead our countries that have masses fixated on stupid clan-based issues.
Otherwise India and Pakistan would be a disappointing waste of 1.5 billion humanity

we do not want to become china infact most of the countries do not want to become china.

Not stupid people. Just simply sectarian, care only for themselves. And not sincere. Here corrupt is regarded as clever, rest fools.
Fact of the matter is that we need a small set of patriots
You sound like Zaid Hamid :P. I partly agree with you that democracy for India has been really bad and a more autocratic approach may have been better for growth. However, Indian democracy after all these years is now evolved such that its in a stage where going back is not an option, and in fact, in just few more years will it can be much better. I can see the light. Also, other options don't necessarily mean success.
