True cities and rivers werent as shitty back in the 80's as they are today. reminds me of an elderly person who few years ago said ganga was clean about 30 yrs ago....people could see the river bed when they stood in thr water.... however today due to rapid urbanisation and due negligence its a mess. Its true. There is a river called "Cooum" flowing through Madras. When I grew up in 1990's Cooum was synonymous with Sewage canal. We never knew until later in my life that it used to be a fresh water river. And kids thought it was just sewage.
My dad told me that in late 70's and early 80's it used to be a tourist attraction with govt agencies offering boat rides, people bathing, and surrounded by parks. Now one cant get near 100 metres of this river due to its stink. Rapid and unplanned urbanisation has been the bane of it.
To be honest Karachi in the 60's and 70's was as clean as any major City in the world with its own double decker buses, mass transit system etc. This video is from the end 70s or early 80 Newdelhi:
Look at those gracious Leyland Double deckers and road trains (the trailer buses then were called). This video is from the end 70s or early 80 Newdelhi:
resemble Chinese cities during the same period. both countries were at the same development level. This video is from the end 70s or early 80 Newdelhi:
